Obituary for Dorothy M.Jessen
ξBattle Creek, Iowa - Dorothy Jessen, 81, of Battle Creek passed away Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital in Sioux City. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Armstrong Funeral Home, Mapleton, Iowa. The Rev. Bruce Schoup will officiate. Interment will be following the service in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Mapleton. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. prior to the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. The family is receiving condolences on line at www.armstrongfuneral.com. Dorothy was born on Sept. 17, 1933, in Magnolia, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Mary Gilkerson. She was raised on a farm south of Magnolia, and graduated from Magnolia Consolidated in 1950. She attended Iowa State Teachers College, now UNI and taught in the Council Bluffs, Mapleton, and Denison school systems. She married Charles Jessen, Feb. 6, 1954 at the Magnolia Methodist Church. They then lived on a farm in Crawford County. Charles passed away Feb. 4, 1999. Dorothy was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, and was a church organist for over 55 years, gave many piano lessons and was involved with the bell choir and Evening Guild. Dorothy's hobbies included pencil sketching and quilting. She and Charles enjoyed camping and also truck trips across the country. Dorothy played violin in the college symphony and Cherokee Symphony. Survivors include sister Doris Sutton of Denver; daughters Katherine Newman of Castle Rock , Colorado, Mary Lu Flynn and husband Dick of Danbury, Lori Mundt and husband Michael of Denison; her beloved grandchildren: Charlie Anders (Kellie), Allison Newman, Jennifer Geyer (John), Jessica, Jared Kastner (Christina), Randee Kastner; five great-grandchildren, Isabelle Ann Davis, Ella Anders, Kyler Kastner, Quinten Newman, and Liam Geyer; and many nieces and nephews. ξIn addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter Barbara, who died in infancy; brother, Donald Gilkerson; sister Mary Jean Jessen, and brother-in-law Joseph Jessen, and sister-in-law Hazel Hansen of San Diego. ξ ξξ
