Obituary for Lois Miller
Lois Miller Mapleton, Iowa - Lois Miller, 100, of Mapleton, Iowa died Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at Burgess Health Center at Onawa, Iowa. Funeral services will be Friday, July 3, 2015 at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Don Studley officiating. Lunch will be served at the church prior to the burial in Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig, Iowa. Visitation will be Thursday, July 2 after 5:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. The family is receiving condolences on line at ξLois Henrietta (Petersen) Miller was born June 13, 1915, on a farm in Oak Creek Township in Crawford County, Iowa, and received her education in a rural school near her home. She was the daughter of Fritz and Clara (Grill) Petersen. She grew up on the farm one of eight children, three boys and five girls. Lois was united in marriage to Carl Fredrick Miller at Vermillion, South Dakota on September 28, 1939. The couple was blessed with three children, two boys and one girl. ξAfter four years of farming in Crawford County, Carl and Lois bought a farm in 1948 located in Monona County five miles east of Mapleton. There they continued to farm and raise their family. The couple retired and moved in to Mapleton in 1983. Carl passed away September 28, 1986. Lois continued to manage the farm for nearly 30 years following her husband's death in a successful manner in an ever so changing economy, an accomplishment that brought pride to the family. Lois was an active member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton where she also belonged to the Women's Fellowship. She enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens, reading, sewing, making quilts and playing cards, primarily Bridge. She was a kind friendly lady who loved her family above all. ξFamily members left to lovingly cherish their memories of Lois are one son, K. Darrell Miller and his wife, Cynthia of Wayne, Nebraska; one daughter, Cleo Hoch of Omaha, Nebraska; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two step grandchildren; eight step great grandchildren; one brother, Melvin Petersen and his wife, Marcella of Schleswig, Iowa; one sister, Dorothy Pollock of Vail, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Nellie Petersen of Deloit, Iowa; along with many extended family members. Along with her beloved husband, Carl, Lois was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jack Miller; one son-in-law, Larry Hoch; two brothers, Rowland Petersen and his two wives, Lavern and Lorraine and Harry Petersen; three sisters, Ruth McGinn and her husband, Pete, Henrietta Hollander and her husband, Eldo; Mary Miller and her husband, Ray; brother-in-law, Ray Pollock; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Frank and Emma Jean Edgington and Ralph and Arlene Miller; and nieces and nephews.
