Luetta E. Mordhorst Denison, Iowa - Luetta E. Mordhorst, 89, of Denison, Iowa, died unexpectedly following a very short illness Saturday, February 14, 2015, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at Denison, Iowa. The funeral service will be Wednesday, February 18, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute, Iowa with Pastor Marcus Manley officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery at Ute. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 17 after 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute. Luetta Elinor Christensen was born July 6, 1925, on a farm west of Soldier, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Amanda (Jensen) Christensen. She attended grade school in Soldier, Iowa until moving with her parents to Ute, Iowa in 1938. Luetta graduated from Ute High School in 1942. She attended Sunday School in Soldier, Iowa and was baptized November 13, 1938, at the Christian Church in Ute, Iowa. Later she became a confirmed member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute, Iowa. In her early years she played Cornet in the band and sang in the Glee Club and took piano lessons. She spent many hours as a young girl roller skating at the Ute skating rink. After graduation jobs included the Madison Sweet Shop in Ute, clerical work for the Ute School, and household duties for Dr. and Mrs. Liska. On January 8, 1944, Luetta was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Elmer Clarence Mordhorst at the Charter Oak Lutheran Parsonage by Rev. Hugo Neiting. They started farming six miles south of Ute for one year and then purchased an 80 acre farm between Ute and Soldier in 1945. They lived there 25 years farming and raising purebred hogs and having hog sales on the farm. Luetta was the bookkeeper for the farming and hog operation which included filing purebred pedigrees and entry applications to hog shows and fairs. She planted and harvested a large garden each year and helped on the farm wherever needed. She was active in church activities that included Ladies Aid, Bible School Teacher, Sunday School Teacher, Walther League Youth Sponsor, Choir and played piano for Sunday School. Luetta and family enjoyed vacations to the Ozarks, Seattle World's Fair, Yellowstone National Park, and Hawaii. She enjoyed family gatherings and frequent trips to Branson, Missouri seeing many musical shows. She spent her retirement years in Denison, Iowa. Luetta was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be missed by all. A Mom who was everything warm, caring, and kind. Her family values, work ethic, and spiritual guidance have been an inspiration to her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, a sister Lucille, twin sisters Ellen Dahl and Helen Christiansen (who died as an infant), and one son, Russell Mordhorst. Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Elmer, a sister-in-law, Elsie Dutler of Holstein, Iowa, two sons, Donald (Teresa) Mordhorst of Soldier, Iowa and Dennis (Barb) Mordhorst also of Soldier, Iowa and one daughter Patricia (George) Wallis of San Antonio, Texas, nine grandchildren: Michael and Cheryl Mordhorst, Matthew and Kristi Mordhorst, Dave and Jill Klinker, Aaron and Debra Gress, Jason and Jenny Neddermeyer, Jared and Robin Neddermeyer, Kyle and Angela Wallis, Kent and Heather Wallis, and Mark and Jennifer Wallis, 22 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
