Obituary for Doris Lacey
Danbury, Iowa - Doris I. Lacey, 89, of Danbury, Iowa died unexpectedly in her home Sunday morning, October 19, 2014. Visitation will be Thursday, October 23 at 10:00 a.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. A Celebration of Life Service led by her children, will follow at 11:00 a.m. Whether able or not able to attend the Celebration of Life Service, please join the family at the Mapleton American Legion Hall located at 211 South First Street for a delicious lunch. Following lunch, burial will be in the Ida Grove Cemetery at Ida Grove, Iowa. The family is receiving condolences on line at www.armstrongfuneral.com. Doris Irene (Still) Lacey was born February 2, 1925 outside of Holstein, Iowa, the 4th of 10 children to Lee and Nellie (Hawn) Still. In her early years, her family lived outside of Minot, ND for 10 years until repeated drought brought them back to a farm north of Ida Grove, Iowa.ξ She graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1943 then headed on an adventure to Portland, Oregon with a cousin to work in the shipyards during World War II.ξ After returning home she taught at Silver Creek Township country school .ξ Doris married Garth Wm Lacey on June 17, 1944.ξ She and her husband farmed land near Danbury, Iowa which has been in the Lacey family since 1922.ξ She was blessed to remain on the farm for 70 years.ξ She and Garth were always so grateful to God for the blessing of raising their 4 adopted children, their first child passing away at the age of 3 in a tragic accident. Doris was a Garfield Township 4H leader and enjoyed her lifetime club friends of the Pleasant Valley Club, Garfield Women's Club and the Birthday Club.ξ She was a woman of many talents and loved cooking, flowers, sewing, and was refinishing furniture and remodeling her home into her 70's.ξ She absolutely loved people and opened her door to all.ξ Her life with Jesus Christ showed through in her helping and concern for others. Survivors include her children: Douglas (Gail) Lacey of Hinton, Iowa, Debra Lacey of Danbury, and Deanne Quayle of Danbury; her 13 grandchildren: Ben (Katie) Lacey, Seattle, WA, Jennifer (Nathaniel) Feddes, Albuquerque, NM, Jill (Shane) Furgason, Iowa City, IA, Megan (Michael) Slate, Gastonia, NC, Kristopher (Val) Quayle, Forest City, IA, Jesse Quayle, Forest City, IA, Levi Quayle, Ames, IA and Isaiah Quayle, Mason City, IA; 8 great grandchildren: Eva, Vivian, Daphne, and Bianca Lacey, Jonathan and Callen Feddes, Gracie and Samuel Slate; sisters: Gladys Bower, Ida Grove, IA, June Grieve, Sacramento, CA, Audrey (Walter) Kent, Lompoc, CA; brother: Marvin (Bette) Still, Sioux City, IA, and sisters-in-law:ξ Doris Still, Holstein, IA, Irene Meyer, Seal Beach, CA, Jean Still, Spirit Lake, IA; many nieces and nephews; and good friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Garth; a daughter, Kay Lynn; granddaughter, Hannah Grace Quayle (stillborn); siblings: Everett Still, Glen Still, Lila Burk, Raymond Still (infant), Howard Still, Ron Still; brothers and sister-in-law: Jay Bower, LeRoy Burk, Phyllis Still, Duane and Clara Lacey, Vance and Faye Lacey, Galen and Dege Lacey, and Herman and Garnet Sohm.
