Obituary for Wayne R. Pierce
Wayne R. Pierce Anthon, Iowa - Wayne R. Pierce, 84, of Anthon, Iowa passed away Monday, September 29, 2014 at his home in Anthon surrounded by his family. The funeral service will be Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of Christ in Anthon with Pastor Kody Killian officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Anthon with military graveside honors provided by the American Legion McNiff Post #389 of Anthon. Visitation will be Friday, October 3 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. The family is receiving condolences on line at www.armstrongfuneral.com. Wayne Russell Pierce was born February 11, 1930, at Mapleton, Iowa, the third of eight sons born to Mabry "Frank" and Mabel (Wacheldorf) Pierce. He moved with his family to Anthon, Iowa in 1940 and graduated from Anthon High School with the class of 1948. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from February 23, 1951 until February 2, 1953 and was stationed in Alaska. Upon his honorable discharge, Wayne returned home. He started Pierce Oil Company in Anthon in 1955, a business he owned and operated for 45 years. On September 26, 1959, Wayne was united in marriage to LaQuita Stevens at Bellevue, Nebraska. They had three children, two sons and one daughter. Wayne and LaQuita celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on September 26, 2014. He was a dedicated member of the Church of Christ in Anthon where he served as Deacon. As a veteran he was a member of the American Legion McNiff Post #389 of Anthon for 61 years. He volunteered as Adjutant, a tradition his father started in the Pierce family thus spanning over 40 years of service in that capacity to the Legion. He was also a past member of the Anthon City Council. Wayne was known as one of the most "honest" men you'd ever meet! Wayne loved stock car racing, sponsoring Mike Benson Racing for 35 years. Every weekend his entire family would join and support his love of the sport which thus developed into a family event and many good memories. He also enjoyed watching the Cubs and the Twins baseball games, getting to attend a Twins game in 2013. Wayne is survived by his wife LaQuita; daughter Kim (John) Crees of South Sioux City, Nebraska, son Pat (Sharon) Pierce of Anthon, and son Russ (Kim Nelson) Pierce of Sioux City; son-in-law Ken Carrington of Anthon; grandchildren Cory (Nicole) Carrington, Preston (Katie) Pierce, Michele (Kiron Curry) Pierce, Kelly (Adam) Schornack, Breeanna and Jacob Pierce, Dan, and Courtney Nelson; two brothers and their wives, Larry and Betty Pierce of Correctionville, Iowa and Terry and Rhonda Pierce of Redmond, Oregon; two sisters-in-law, Joann Pierce of Correctionville, Iowa and Anita Cooch of Anthon, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mabel Pierce; and five brothers, Louis, Melvin, Glen "Smoky", Roger "Butch", and Darrell Pierce.
