Clara J. Amunson Ute, Iowa - Clara J. Amunson, 91, of Ute, Iowa passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa. The funeral service will be Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute, Iowa with Pastor Marcus Manley officiating. Burial will be in the Soldier Valley Lutheran Cemetery in rural Soldier, Iowa. Visitation will be Friday, October 15 after 4:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute. Clara Johanna Amunson, 91, passed away at the Correctionville Nursing Home on November 12, 2013.ξ She was born on September 9, 1922 on the family farm southeast of Ute, Iowa, to William and Alma (Mohr) Bartels.ξ She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute, and was a lifelong member. As a child, Clara received her formal education and soon helped out on the farm shocking grain and hauling ear corn with wooden wagons and horses, milking cows, and doing the chicken chores, but she always talked about the hours she spent churning butter!ξ For fun, they would have 'house dances', and invite friends over, and roll back the rug!ξ The relatives always got together and played cards and celebrated birthdays.ξ When she was 13, she started working for people in their homes, doing chores and helping with newborn babies.ξ Later she moved to Denison and worked at the Council Oak Store.ξ She commented on how she hated licking all those World War II food stamps!ξ She also worked at the Denison Hotel. She met the love of her life, Kermit Amunson, when she was employed at the home of his aunt and uncle, Oscar and Rozella Christman.ξ He proposed to her in Denison when they were in his 1935 Chevy, and he gave her a gardenia when he proposed.ξ They were married on August 22, 1943 at Muskogee, Oklahoma because he was in the Army, stationed there at Camp Gruber. After Kermit returned from WW II they lived briefly by Soldier on the Lyle Carritt farm, and then lived and farmed south of Ute for over 50 years.ξ They were blessed with five children; Kenny, Carolyn, Ronnie, Lynette, and Leann.ξ Kermit passed away on Nov. 27, 1996, and Clara moved to Ute in 1997,ξthen to the Assisted Living Home in Lawton in 2010, where she resided until Sept. of 2013. Clara found her greatest joy in her family and church.ξ She was a member of St. Paul's Ladies Aid, the Lamplighters, Ladies Choir, Sunday School teacher, and sewed countless quilts for missions.ξ She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, theξ'900' Neighborhood Club, the Spirit Singers, ξand the Red Hat Ladies Society.ξ Clara was very creative, artistic, and talented.ξ She loved serving her Lord in any way possible, and created many beautiful bannersξfor services.ξ She also sewed quilts and clothes for allξher children and grandchildren, and embroidered many lovely gifts.ξ She was always very thrifty, and could create something out of nothing!ξ Clara lovedξmusic!ξ She was always singing or whistling a happy tune, always optimistic, upbeat, and encouraging!ξ She loved to dance, and attend all the dancesξwhere Kenny's band played.ξ She faithfullyξattended her children and grandchildren's music programs, and made sure all her kids learned piano and another instrument.ξ Clara also loved gardening, especially flowers, andξwas an awesome cook!ξ She loved the color red and she loved to play cards!ξξξClara had an adventurous spirit and was always willing to travel anywhere andξtry something new!ξ She even rode the Tower of Terror at Disney World when she was nearly 80, and rode the 4-wheeler when she was 88! Clara is survived by her five children: Kenneth and Bette Amunson of Ute, Carolyn and Bruce Yockey of Sioux City, Ronald and Debra Amunson of Soldier, Lynette and Harvey Thies of Ute, and Leann and Brian Henschenξ of Correctionville;ξ 15 grandchildren:ξ Lori and husband Mike Green of Lakewood, Colorado; Lana and husband Kip Meseck of Denver; ξShari Mitchell of Lakewood, Colorado;ξ Troy and wife Tabitha Yockey of Bellevue, Washington; Jason Yockey and friend Meghan of Colorado Springs; Christy and husband Mike Cook of Sioux City; Katie and husband Juston VanHorn of Colorado Springs; Kimberly and husband Daniel Stieler of Nevada, Iowa; Gregory Amunson and fianc��e Theresa of Ute; Heidi Thies of Harlan; Angela and husband John Rosener of Schleswig; John Thies of Ute; Melissa Thies and friend Jeremy of West Des Moines; Andrew Henschen and Bailey Henschen of Correctionville;ξ also 24 great-grandchildren and one on-the-way:ξ Danielle and Joshua Keating; Noah and Hannah Meseck; Kyle and Luke Mitchell; Tyler, Alex and Elijah Yockey; Sean, Shannon, Andrew, Travis and DakotaξYockey; Ethan, Katelyn, Ally and Benjamin Cook; Keira and Emarie VanHorn; Gavin Amunson; Ashley,ξSara and Jenna Rosener. Also many nieces and nephews.ξ Along with her husband, Clara was preceded in death by her parents,ξher brother Lawrence Bartels, sisters Esther Gran and Halene Frerichs, and all of her sisters and brothers-in-law,ξbeing the final aunt on both sides of the family.ξ She was a beautiful Christian lady who left her hand print of love on all that knew her.
