Obituary for George L. Sargent
Anthon, IA - George L. Sargent, 87, of Anthon went to Heaven to join his beloved wife Mae on July 4th, 2013. The funeral service will be Monday, July 8 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Anthon with Pastor Janet Rieckhoff-Faris officiating. Burial will be in the Fairfield Cemetery at Rock Branch, rural Correctionville, Iowa with military graveside honors provided by the American Legion McNiff Post #389 of Anthon. Visitation will be Sunday AT THE CHURCH after 3:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Sheryl Ashley officiating. Born Sept. 30, 1925, to Lewis and Minnie (Jahn) Sargent in Moville, Iowa,ξ George graduated from Moville Public School. On Dec. 13, 1943, at the age of 18, he was sworn into the U.S. Marine Corps in Omaha, Nebraska. He served his country during World War II until 1946. After his discharge from the Marines, George traveled from Camp LeJeune in North Carolina to Moville, where he worked with his father in a trucking business. Over the remainder of his working years, he was employed with Swift Packing Plant in Sioux City and Terra Industries in Anthon. On April 19, 1952, he married Mae Maurene Fey. They raised five daughters. George and Mae lived in the Anthon area the entire 55 years of their married life. Mae passed away on Nov. 6, 2007. George was a member of Anthon United Methodist Church and the American Legion McNiff Post 389 of Anthon. George gave of his time faithfully and unselfishly to his community. He served on the Anthon-Oto School Board and the administrative board of the Anthon United Methodist Church. He also served in the Anthon Volunteer Fire Department and was instrumental in establishing the Anthon Rescue Squad. Of all the activities that he enjoyed and was active in, his most memorable role was that of the community Santa Claus. Numerous residents of Anthon and the surrounding communities were treated to a visit from Santa over the 50 years that George played Santa. It brought him great joy to visit both children and the elderly and share the Christmas spirit that many remember him for today. He enjoyed watching football, basketball and baseball. He loved watching his children and grandchildren in all the activities that they participated in. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. In 2009, George traveled to Washington, D.C., with the Honor Flight. It was a day filled with many special memories that he held close to his heart and loved sharing with others. George had a strong faith and was obedient to his Lord's will. He was always true to his best self, living a life that was honest in purpose and deed, able to face his loved ones and his God without fear of shame. He accepted his share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm. He was loyal and faithful to his Country. He had great courage and strength. He was a kind and loving man and many a person has left his presence with a hug, hearing those words that he shared so often, "I love you." George is survived by his daughters, Connie Ashley, Kathy Hodgdon and her husband, John, Karyl Lyon, Kristin Noreen and her husband, Tom, and Keri Kranz and her husband, Gary; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Mary Lou Tabke. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae; his parents, Lewis and Minnie Sargent; two sisters and their husbands, Louise and Lyle Medcalf, and Clara and Wayne Rumohr; a brother-in-law, Dwight Tabke; a son-in-law, Edward Ashley; a great-grandchild, Mason Ashley; and twin great-grandchildren, Emma and Dakota Ashley. ξ Armstrong Funeral Service Grant and Cindy Armstrong
