Katie Hoskins, age 16, of Soldier, Iowa, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Children’s Nebraska Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

Two years ago, at age 14, Katie had received a life-saving double lung transplant when she was diagnosed with a rare and deadly disease called Pulmonary Veno Occlusive Disease. The transplant, performed at Texas Children’s Hospital, was successful but her life afterwards was filled with more medical trials. Only a year after her transplant she developed Post Transplant Lymphoproliferative Disease, a type of cancer unique and rare to transplant patients. She underwent treatment but ultimately began to show signs of incurable chronic rejection of the transplanted lungs. This eventually led to complications she could not recover from in her weakened state.

Katie discovered a love of music at a very young age. At 2 years old she performed an entire 3-verse song for family and friends, and was quickly hooked on performing. She performed in musical theater as a youth and teenager with Omaha Community Playhouse in Omaha, Nebraska, Elkhorn Community Theater in Elkhorn, Nebraska, as well as Chanticleer Theater in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

At 8 years old she sat down at a piano and discovered she could play by ear almost any song she heard. She continued to grow that talent as well as learning to read music, and became an accomplished pianist and later song-writer. She would often perform singing and accompanying herself on the piano, ukulele, or guitar.

During the last year of her life, knowing the end was near, she made a goal to learn 20 new things before she died. This is when she taught herself to paint with watercolor, play new instruments, and she especially loved learning to crochet small animal creations she enjoyed making for nurses and doctors while she was in the hospital.

Katie was preceded in death by her sister Elaine Hoskins and her grandmother Serelle Hoskins.

She leaves behind siblings Maggie, Catcher, Darla, Mira, and Samuel McClure, as well as her parents Adam and Vera Hoskins, and many extended family members.
