Edward “Ed” L. Henkenius, age 88, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away at on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at the Burgess Health Center of Onawa, Iowa.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 17, 2024, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, Iowa. Father William A. McCarthy will officiate. Committal Services will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery of Mapleton, Iowa. Military Rites will be conducted by the Loren Hollister Post No. 496 of the American Legion of Mapleton, Iowa.
A Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary at 6:45 p.m., followed by a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m., Friday, August 16, 2024, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, Iowa.

Edward “Ed” Louis Henkenius, the son of Fred M. and Angela (Kral) Henkenius, was born on May 28, 1936, in Carroll, Iowa. He grew up in the Vail, Iowa, area and received his education at St. Ann’s Catholic School graduating with the class of 1954. Ed enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict from 1954-1957. Upon his honorable discharge, Ed decided to continue his education at Iowa State University graduating with a B.S. in Ag Business & Science.
On October 21, 1957, Ed was united marriage to Mary Ann Rosener at the St. Ann’s Catholic Church of Vail, Iowa. The couple moved around during the early years of their marriage and eventually made their forever home in Mapleton, Iowa, where they have resided for 60 years. They were blessed with four children: Lori, Lisa, Krista, and Joseph.
When Ed graduated from college he taught high school Ag and science for three years. He then began working for the Iowa State Farm Business Association. Ed later operated the International Harvester dealership in Mapleton for 8 years. After selling the dealership, he went to work at Valley Bank & Trust (now First Security Bank) where he was employed for 21 years; first as a loan officer and eventually as Vice President until his retirement.
Ed was a very active member of the community. He was as a past president of both the Mapleton Club and Willow Vale Golf Club, served for 20 years on the Monona County Conservation Board, was active in Pheasants Forever, was on the Mapleton Municipal Electric board as well as the Monona County Landfill board. He was also a faithful and devoted member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. In his free time, Ed enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, and golfing. He loved time spent with his family and they will forever treasure all memories he captured on his DVD recordings of their family events. Ed will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 66 years Mary Ann Henkenius of Mapleton, IA; children Lisa (Bill) Dillon of Arden Hills, MN, Krista Santucci of Chesterfield, MO and Joseph (Kristin) Henkenius of Fremont, NE; son-in-law Bill Jones of Sartell, MN; grandchildren Brian (Bethany) Dillon, Jenny Dillon, Matt (Ashlyn) Jones, Liz Henkenius, Ted (Paige) Jones, Nic (Melissa) Henkenius, Alex Santucci, and Kayla Santucci; 3 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Mary Kay Henkenius; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Angela Henkenius; daughter Lori Jones; brothers Glenn (Kitty), Matt (Kay), and Charles Henkenius; sisters Leah Henkenius and Marie (Ray) Bechen; in-laws Joe and Colette Rosener; aunts and uncles.
