Obituary for Norma Jean Paulsen
Norma Jean Paulsen, age 81, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2018, at the Maple Heights Nursing Home of Mapleton, Iowa.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 27, 2018 at the United Church of Christ of Rodney, Iowa. Pastor Karen Handke will officiate; with Committal Services following in the Little Sioux Township Cemetery of Smithland, Iowa. A visitation will be held one hour prior from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 27, 2018 at the United Church of Christ of Rodney, Iowa. Norma was born on November 21, 1936, in Correctionville, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Hazel (Zerfing) Hansen. She was raised on a farm northwest of Danbury, Iowa and attended rural Pat King Country School through the 8th grade. Norma graduated from Anthon High School with the class of 1955.
In July of 1955, she started working for First Trust & Savings Bank of Anthon, Iowa, as a teller and book keeper. Over the next 35 years, Norma would work her way up to assistant Vice President. When the bank was sold, Norma went to work for Valley Trust & Savings of Mapleton, Iowa, for the next 15 years.
On June 8, 1958, Norma was united into marriage to John P. Paulsen Jr., in the United Methodist Church of Anthon, Iowa. The family would farm in Anthon for 27 years. After Norma retired from the bank the couple moved to an acreage over by Climbing Hill where they continued to farm and collect tractors. They enjoyed attending tractor & threshing shows where they would show their ½ size John Deere 4040 tractor that John had built by hand. Norma and John enjoyed camping and would travel to tractor shows in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Montana; often times bringing tractors home to add to their collection. Along the way they made many long lasting friendships.
Norma was a past member of the Thonna Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron in 1976 where she would hold many offices inside of the Anthon chapter. She also served as the treasurer of the Western Iowa Antique Tractor and Engine Club for 20 years, where she and John were charter club members.
Norma is survived by her special cousins Walter (Linda) Paulsen of Anthon, Iowa, Kurt Paulsen of Anthon, Iowa, Karl Paulsen of Moville, Iowa and Dan Paulsen of Moville, Iowa; brother-in-law Conrad Jensen, of Mapleton, Iowa; and her niece Janet Trempe of Anthon, Iowa
She was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Hazel Hansen; husband John P. Paulsen Jr; and sister Judy Jensen.
