Lowell Edward Carstens, age 94, of Mapleton, Iowa, better known as "Bud" to most, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 21, 2022. Bud was born in the family home outside of Charter Oak, Iowa, on December 14, 1927, to Conrad and Ellen (Aronson) Carstens. He attended country school near Charter Oak and then later graduated from Charter Oak High School in 1946.

He was united in marriage to Beverly "Bev" Malone in 1950. The union was blessed with three children: Rita, Randy, and Richard. During this time Bud worked for Lloyd Olson Construction operating heavy equipment. Later he purchased a farm on Berne Gravel which was halfway in between Charter Oak and Ute, Iowa. He raised various crops, hogs, and cattle. In the mid 60's, the family moved to the town of Ute. In 1974, Bud and Bev divorced, but remained good friends throughout the years.

Bud farmed the majority of his life but eventually sold the farm. After retiring Bud spent time with his companion, Eileen Hinrichsen. Together they enjoyed their golden years traveling, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. Together they visited several locations across the United States that included Arkansas, California, Kansas City, Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Bud loved cars. He enjoyed traveling with friends to various used car auctions looking for that hidden gem and taking in the thrill of having the winning bid. He occasionally traded vehicles and even delivered a few to California where he would also enjoy visiting and sightseeing with his daughter, Rita.

Throughout the years, there were many family picnics and get-togethers. Whether it was laughs shared over a game of cards, a dance to a fun song or a simple conversation over sweets and a cup of coffee, Bud always had a smile on his face and a gentle kindness to his demeanor. He was a generous man who will be remembered for his character and his gratitude.

Bud spent his last years, content and well taken care of at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa. He spoke highly of staff throughout the years. We are forever grateful for the staff of Maple Heights and genuine love and care he received and felt while in their care.

He is survived by his brother Jack of Las Vegas, NV; daughter Rita Carstens of San Diego, CA; son Randy (Robyn) Carstens of Castana, IA and their two children Alison (Curt) Justice and their son Cullen and Aaron (Heather) Carstens and their two daughters Madilynne and Kenzlee; son Richard (Cathy) Carstens and their daughter Casey and her fiancé Jay Krier; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents; sister Donna Mae; brother Lawrence; sister Maurine and brother-in-law Walt Holtorf; and brother Gale.
