Delbert E. Olson was born on October 29, 1923, to Oscar and Meta (Specht) Olson at home outside Kenwood, Iowa. A lifelong, faithful Lutheran, he was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa and was a current member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ute, Iowa. After graduating from eighth grade at the country school outside of Kenwood, Delbert went to work helping his father on the family farm south of Charter Oak.
On April 6, 1947, he married the gal next door, Marcella “Sally” Reincke. They were blessed with four children: Richard, Lorrie, Randall, and James. The couple moved to Colorado in the 1950’s, where Delbert did carpentry work and enjoyed the mountains with his family. In the 1960’s they moved back to Iowa to take over the family farm. When a bad hail storm destroyed the crops in 1969, Delbert moved his family to Ute. He was a jack-of-all-trades and held many positions including working for Oxy Fertilizer Plant, Barney Barnett Machinery Auction, Lloyd Olson Construction, and Gale Steinbach, all of Ute and Godbersen-Smith of Ida Grove, Iowa, building bridges.
Delbert married Beverly (Malone) Carstens on September 22, 1980 and joined his family with hers. They both loved to go dancing, travel, play cards and Rummikub, and spend time with family.
Delbert always had a smile on his face and loved everyone. He never had an unkind word to say to anyone or about anyone. He lived by the motto of, “It doesn’t cost a dime to be kind, forgiving, and carry a smile on your face.” Delbert’s faith and his family were everything to him, with family reunions and get-togethers being number one on his list. He was dearly loved by all who knew him.
Left to cherish his memory are daughter Lorrie (Kent) Moffitt of Ute, IA; son James Olson of Ute, IA; stepdaughter Rita Carstens of San Diego, CA; stepsons Randy (Robyn) Carstens of Castana, IA and Richard (Cathy) Carstens of Ute, IA; grandchildren: Brittany Newby, Delbert “Andy” Conto, Christopher Conto, Joshua Conto, Alison Justice, Aaron Carstens, and Casey Carstens; nine great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.
Delbert was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Meta; wife, Beverly; and sons Randall (in infancy) and Richard.
