Obituary for Viola B. Archer
Viola B. Archer Mapleton, IA - Viola B. Archer, 94, of Mapleton, Iowa passed away Friday, August 2, 2013 at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa. The funeral Mass will be Monday, August 5, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton with Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Mapleton. Visitation will be Sunday after 3:30 p.m. with a Rosary by St. Mary's Guild at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. Viola Bollig Archer was born October 5, 1918, at Danbury, Iowa, the daughter of George and Florence (Neumayer) Bollig. She grew up in the Danbury area and graduated from St. Patrick's Academy. She attended Presentation Convent at Dubuque, Iowa but then made the decision to return home to Danbury. It was there that she met Peter Archer. They were united in marriage December 27, 1938 at St. Patrick's Church in Danbury.. The couple made their home in North Dakota for a short time and then moved to Mapleton. Peter and Viola moved to New York State for work reasons and because there were other Archer Family members living there. It was during their years in New York that all three of their children were born. When the family was still young, they moved back to Danbury and Mapleton. Viola worked as a cook at St. Mary's Catholic School in Mapleton for many years. After moving to Sioux City in 1965, she worked in house keeping at St. Luke's Hospital from which she retired. Peter and Viola loved to square dance and were members of the "Soo Puffers". They also enjoyed bingo, casino visits, bus trips and travel in general, often taking their beloved cat, "Duke" with them. Viola was a spontaneous personality. open to about anything and ready to tell you just what she thought. Peter passed away in November of 1999. Viola continued to live in Sioux City until 2004, when she moved in the Assisted Living at Maple Heights in Mapleton and later into the nursing home. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton and St. Mary's Guild. Family members left to lovingly remember Viola are her three children, Carol Vandivort and her husband, George of Mapleton, Iowa, Marvin Archer and his wife, Karla of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Marian "Tootie" Schiltz and her husband, Gene of Des Moines, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; three step great great grandchildren; and one brother and his wife, George "Junior" and Audrey Bollig of Dows, Iowa. Along with her husband, Viola was preceded in death by her parents; one sister and her husband, Frances and Joe Beachem; and one brother and his wife, Marvin and Mona Bollig.
