Obituary for Vera M. Collins
Vera M. Collins, 78, of Anthon, Iowa died Monday, September 14, 2015, at her home in Anthon following a lengthy illness. The celebration of life service for Vera as well as her husband, Pete, will be Friday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Visitation will be Friday after 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial of Vera's cremains along with burial of her husband, Pete's cremains will be Saturday, September 19 at 9:00 a.m. at the Oto Cemetery at Oto, Iowa. The family is receiving condolences on line at www.armstrongfuneral.com. Vera Mae (Benton) Collins was born in Oto, Iowa November 5, 1936, the daughter of Edward and Bernice (Kimsey) Benton. She grew up in Oto where she was educated and graduated with the class of 1955. She attended Wayne State College, earning a degree in Elementary Education. ξOn May 31. 1956. Vera was united in marriage to Maurice "Pete" Collins at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto. Pete and Vera became the proud parents of four children, 15 grandchildren, and now five great grandchildren. Vera and Pete were both teachers. Vera taught school in Winside, Nebraska, Mapleton, Iowa and Smithland, Iowa. She retired from teaching to pursue numerous business ventures throughout the years along side her husband, Pete. They moved to Anthon in the 1960's and worked in careers of insurance, real estate and taxes, owning their own agency for many years. Their son, Tony, took over the Collins Agency in 1985. They became part owner of Rodney Grain in Rodney, Iowa for seven years before they retired. Pete passed away April 2, 2014. ξVera especially loved family times and attending her grandchildren's concerts and ball games. She found peace in watching and feeding her birds and nurturing her flower gardens. She also enjoyed watching all the kids playing in her neighborhood. Those family members left to lovingly honor Vera's life and legacy include her four children, her son, Tony Collins and his wife, Julie, of Anthon and their three sons, Lucas Collins and his wife, Ashley of Schaller, Iowa and their children, Emerson, Averlee, and Henley, Tyler Collins of Anthon, and Joey Collins and his wife, Theresa (Simmons) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, her son, Tim Collins and his wife, Dennise of Delaware, Ohio and their children, Maddi Grossenbaugh and her husband, Jesse of Brunswick, Ohio and their son, Collin, Mary Collins of Brunswick, Ohio, and Michael Collins and his wife, Jenna of Wadsworth, Ohio and their daughter Emma, her daughter Mona Kirchgatter and her husband, Scott of Anthon and their daughters, Allison Kirchgatter and Megan Kirchgatter, both attending Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, her son Matt Collins and his wife, Jennifer of Sioux City, Iowa and their children, Kalie Hagedorn and her husband, Nick of Southern Pines, North Carolina, Alex Collins attending the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Abigail Collins and Benjamin Collins of Sioux City, Iowa, Jacob Jungers attending the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, Jillian Jungers of Sioux City, Iowa and attending DMACC, and Jennae Jungers attending Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sisters, Donna Stratton and Clara Bolte, both of Oto, Iowa; along with many nieces and nephews and other extended family members. Along with her beloved husband, Pete; Vera was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Bernice Benton; three brothers, Oren, Wayne, and Keith Benton; and one sister, Maureen (Benton) Becker.ξ
