Valerie Ann Mahrt was born September 5, 1958, to John “Jack” and Dorothy (Dicks) Mahrt. The youngest of four siblings, she grew up in Anthon, Iowa.
In her young adult years, she was a wild child, described by those that knew and loved her as an unapologetic free spirit, a hippie, and a free bird, constantly seeking happiness and joy. She bounced around, living life to the fullest. Valerie came home to Anthon when she welcomed Amanda Grace, her pride and joy.
Always the loudest cheerleader in the stands, Valerie loved watching Amanda play sports, especially football, baseball and softball. She was a waitress at Perkins for roughly 15 years where she made lifelong friendships. She then went back to school at Western Iowa Tech Community College, where she proudly earned her degree in Horticulture. She worked for several years out at Little Sioux Park, a job she greatly enjoyed because she loved cruising around the park, talking to the trees. Even though being a park worker was her favorite job she ever got paid for, her absolute favorite titles were always Mommy, Mama Val, and Grammy Bear. She worked hard, played harder, and loved fiercely. Her laughter will be remembered by all who knew her.
Valerie found eternal peace early Thursday, July 25, 2024, in her home.
She is survived by her children, Amanda (partner Shawna Moore) Mahrt, Destiny, Dylan, and Dalton (Brittney) Rex; grandchildren (Baby Bears) Serenity, Carlin, Kasyn, Jasper, Larie, Lynkin, James, Tearyn, Abbi, Jayda, and Maisy. Siblings Doug (Anna) and Vickey (Dennis); sister by choice Cindy Thompson; her McDermott family; and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Valerie was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy Mahrt and Jack “Poopsie” Mahrt, and Darlene Mahrt; brother Gerald “Gary” Mahrt, and James Rex.
