Obituary for Twila J. Adkins
DANBURY, IA - Twila Jean Adkins, 73, of Danbury passed away at St. Luke's Unity Point Hospital in Sioux City on Monday, November 3. Twila Jean (Hicks) Adkins was born on April 11, 1941, at home in Nehawka, Nebraska, the daughter of Richard Eugene Hicks and Ida Juanita (Plunkett-Chaney) Hicks. She went to Nehawka Consolidated Schools for twelve years, graduating in May of 1958. She was active in a variety of clubs and organizations while there. In August of 1958 Twila was selected as "Miss Nehawka" by the Nehawka Community Club and competed in the Cass County Fair and King Korn Karnival as Nehawka's representative to their Queen contests. Twila married Robert Clark Adkins on December 31, 1959. Together they had one daughter, Anita Ann. Twila worked at several different jobs throughout her life: a typist at Boys Town, sold Avon & L.B. Price door to door, retail sales at JC Penney & Cook paints, a school cook, nursing home staff, grocery store checker, Security guard, and a cook at two different truck stops. She also worked as a seamstress for Pendleton Woolen Mills for over twenty-six years, where she was a member of the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union. As a member, she was president for one two year term. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, holding several different offices over the years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and held several local offices and three district offices including district president for three years. She was also a member of the American Legion and Disabled American Legion Auxiliaries. She was a long time member of the Nehawka United Methodist Church and the Nehawka Rebecca Lodge. Twila moved to Danbury, Iowa, in May of 2002 after she got tired of traveling back and forth from Nebraska City for grandchildren's activities. After moving, Twila became as active as she could with the UMW, Vacation Bible School, and typing the church newsletter for part of a year. Mostly she enjoyed being able to travel with Mike and Anita to all of the grandchildrens' programs, sporting events, plays, and other activities. She enjoyed family, cats, dogs, cooking, playing cards, reading, dancing and Nebraska Cornhusker Football (GBR). She was known to throw something at the TV every now and then if she didn't like a call from the refs when her Huskers were playing. Being a great grandnana to Baby Layla and Baby G-W was her newest and brightest joy. Surviving Twila are her daughter, Anita Ann (Michael); grandchildren Ryan (Katie), Lara and Maloree; great granddaughter Layla and Baby GW (on the way); four nieces; three nephews; aunts, uncles and numerous cousins. Preceding her in death was her grandmother Elberta (Bertie) Hicks, grandparents Victor and Christina Plunkett, her parents Richard and Ida Hicks, her stepbrother Earl Chaney, and her husband Robert "Bob" Adkins.
