Obituary for Thomas C. Schimmer

Thomas C. Schimmer, age 76, of Danbury, Iowa, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2025, at his residence of Danbury, Iowa.


A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Danbury, Iowa. Father William A. McCarthy will officiate. Committal services will follow in the Danbury Catholic Cemetery of Danbury, Iowa. Military Rites will be conducted by the Carlson-Frum Post No. 0336 of the American Legion of Danbury, Iowa.


A Visitation will be held one-hour prior to the service from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Danbury, Iowa.

Thomas Clem Schimmer was born on November 6, 1948, to Clem and Mary (Gahan) Schimmer in Battle Creek, Iowa. He grew up in Danbury, Iowa and received his education from Danbury Catholic High School, graduating with the class of 1966.


After graduating, Tom enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard. After completing basic training at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, he served his country and was honorably discharged. Upon returning home, Tom began his employment as a truck driver for Fred Grell Trucking of Danbury.


On November 4, 1972, Tom was united in marriage to Joyce Kapusta at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ravenna, Ohio. The couple made their home in Danbury and were blessed with two sons, Ryan Thomas and Joel Robert.


Tom later owned and operated Schimmer’s Service in Danbury for 30 years before returning to open road with Hewitt Trucking in Ida Grove, Iowa and then eventually Quality Liquid Feed in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, until his retirement.


Tom was a lifelong resident of Danbury and was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Danbury. Tom was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who cherished time with his family. Tom was a volunteer on the Danbury Fire Department and a member of the Carlson-Frum Post No. 0336 of the American Legion of Danbury. Tom also served several terms as a city councilman and ultimately became the Mayor of Danbury for many years. He was always a reliable volunteer for any community project in town. Tom enjoyed playing a round of golf at Willow Vale Golf Club in Mapleton, Iowa, especially with his two boys. He was always up for a beer with his friends and had a love for commanding an 18-wheeler on the open road.


Left to cherish his memories include sons Ryan (Jennifer) Schimmer of Aurora, CO and Joel (Sheila) Schimmer of Burlingame, CA; three grandchildren: Patrick, Molly and Ava; brother John Schimmer of Napa, CA; sisters Betty Meier of Sioux City, IA and Jean Karhoff of Sioux City, IA; sisters-in-law Janice (Thomas) Pacenta of Hudson, OH and Jill (Rick) Lewis of Kent, OH; brothers-in-law Gerald (Marcia) Kapusta of Wauchula, FL, Gregory (Sherry) Kapusta of Georgetown, KY and Jeffrey (Kellie) Kapusta of Kent, OH; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.


Tom was preceded in death by his parents Clem and Mary (Gahan) Schimmer; wife Joyce Schimmer; in-laws Stanley and Florence (Drugan) Kapusta, brother Rev. Robert J. Schimmer; sister-in-law Catherine Schimmer; and brothers-in-law Leo Meier and Bill Karhoff.
