Obituary for Susie Maas
Jeanette B. "Susie" Maas was born May 9, 1942, near Danbury, Iowa, the daughter of Reese and Lula (Taylor) Spaulding. She grew up in the area and graduated from Danbury High School with the class of 1959. After graduation Susie worked at the Paramount Cafe in Mapleton. She also worked at the Mapleton Lanes Bowling Alley where she met her future husband, Carl Maas. Susie and Carl were united in marriage on December 19, 1961 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. The couple farmed for many years east of Mapleton and bought their home south of town in 1970. Along with raising her family, Susie worked at the Mapleton Post Office for over 45 years. She was a long time voluteer at the Mapleton Food Pantry until her death. Susie was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Royal Neighbors of America. She was an avid reader as well as a bingo player. She enjoyed playing cards with her club of good friends, did lots of crocheting for everyone, and raised a big garden until a few years ago. Those survivors left to cherish their memories of Susie include Carl, her husband of 50 years; her son, Carl Allan "Hoss" Maas and his wife, Renae of Mapleton; her daughter Linda Maas and her companion, Bill Meyer, of Linn Grove, Iowa; four grandchildren, Tosha Maas of Mapleton, Brittany Maas of Onawa, Derek Maas of Mapleton, and Danny Lee Evernham of Bronson; one great grandson, "Little Danny"; and one brother, Roger Spaulding and his wife, Lois, of Battle Creek, Iowa; and several other relatives; neighbors; and a multitude of good friends including her very dear friend, Arleen Hinrickson of Mapleton. Susie was born to be a "Grandma Susie" not only to her grandchildren but to her extended families including Megan, Ashley, and Hailey Drenkhahn, Kody, Jackie, and Brandon Krusen, Gage and Chloe Parr, Austin Bridgeman, and Elsie Hein. She was preceded in death by her parents, Reese and Lula Spaulding; a sister, Evelyn Wagner; a brother, James Spaulding; and two infant brothers.
