Obituary for Shirley Mae Kinney

Shirley M. Kinney, age 87, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away on Friday, October 7, 2022, at Unity Point-St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center of Sioux City, Iowa.


A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 14, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Danbury, Iowa. Father Richard D. Ball will officiate. A Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., on Friday, October 14, 2022. Committal services will follow in the Danbury Cemetery of Danbury, Iowa.

Shirley Mae Kinney was born on December 13, 1934, to Peter F. and Clementine (Wellenstein) Conrad in Fonda, Iowa. She was raised there and graduated from Fonda High School with the class of 1952. Shirley furthered her education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, obtaining her teaching certificate in 1954. She taught at schools in Gilmore City, Onawa, Mapleton and Danbury, Iowa.


On July 25, 1959, Shirley was united in marriage to William C. Kinney at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda. They started their family life in Danbury where they welcomed three children: John, Mike and Karen. In 1985 they moved to Mapleton where they ran the Piccadilly Circus Pizza Restaurant for the next 16 years.


Shirley was a member of the Catholic Church Guild and the Mapleton Community Club, serving as its President from 1991-1992. She loved meeting and working with people. Golfing with her husband, Bill, was one of her very favorite things to do. Shirley was an avid fan of the soap opera “Days of Our Lives”.


She is survived by her children Mike (Jan) Kinney of Elko, MN and Karen (Don Fueston) Kinney of Mapleton, IA; grandchildren Megan (Josh) Zylstra, Jill (Josh) Feldmann, Patrick Fueston, Daniel Fueston, and Cole Kinney; great-grandchildren Nora and Margaret Zylstra; and brother Terry (Doreen) Conrad.


She was preceded in death by her parents Peter and Clementine (Wellenstein) Conrad; husband William Kinney; son John W. Kinney; sister and brother-in-law Ann and John Montgomery; sister Connie Karr; and brother Carl C. Conrad.
