Obituary for Shirley A. Pithan
ξShirley A. Pithan, 79, of Edmond, Oklahoma the last three years and formerly of Danbury, Iowa and Sioux City, Iowa died Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at the home of her daughter, Lisa Sabatino in Edmond, Oklahoma. She was under hospice care in treatment of gliobastoma. The funeral Mass will be Monday, July 20, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury, Iowa with Rev. Daniel Greving officiating. Burial will be in the Danbury Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until Mass time at the church. Armstrong Funeral Home of Danbury and Mapleton has been entrusted with the arrangements. The family is receiving condolences on line at www.armstrongfuneral.com. Shirley Ann Pithan was born November 1, 1935, at home in Danbury, Iowa, the daughter of Louis J. and Appolonia S. "Lonie" (Kleine) Ortner. She grew up in the Danbury area and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School with the class of 1954. After graduation, she started working for Northwestern Bell in Sioux City, Iowa. She later worked at Southwestern Bell in Oklahoma City and eventually took early retirement from Southern Bell. Later she worked at the Office of Pardon and Parole for the Texas Department of Correction in Palestine, Texas. Shirley married Keith M. Pithan February 6, 1960, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury. Keith and Shirley lived next door to each other as children and were at times high school sweethearts. Keith passed away November 11, 1994. Watching sports of any kind was time Shirley enjoyed, especially college football and later the OKC Thunder NBA team. The best days were those spent keeping up with her grandchildren's activities and lunching with her cousins. Shirley is lovingly held in the hearts of her three children, Lisa, Stan and Amy; Lisa Sabatino and her husband, Kim of Edmond, Oklahoma and their daughters, Sarah Sabatino of Dallas, Texas and Katie Sabatino of Edmond, Oklahoma, Stan Pithan and his wife, Ann of Sioux City, Iowa and stepsons, Tom Casey of Sioux City and Matt Casey of Luxemberg, and sons, John, Michael, and David Pithan, all living at home, and Amy Jo Pithan of Dallas, Texas; two brothers and their wives, Leon "Swede" and Mary Ortner of Danbury, Iowa and Melvin and Dorothy Ortner of Mapleton, Iowa; and one sister, Jan Mitchell of Las Vegas, Nevada; one brother-in-law, Dan Flanagan of Marshalltown, Iowa; along with many nieces and nephews; and other extended family members. long with her beloved husband, Keith, Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Patricia Ortner, Marion Dolan and her husband, Joe, and Pauline Flanagan; and one brother, Merlin "Bud" Ortner and his wife, Mary Jane "Mickey".
