Ruth Schmieder, 96, of Charter Oak, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at the Denison Care Center of Denison, Iowa.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 3, 2017, at the St. John Lutheran Church of Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Richard C. Merrill will officiate; Committal Services will follow in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery of Charter Oak, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., Friday, June 2, 2017 at the Armstrong – Van Houten Funeral Home of Ute, Iowa. Ruth Emma Schmieder was born on May 23, 1921, in Ute, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Anna Timm Wellner. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
On February 3, 1946, Ruth married to Benny Schmieder at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Solider Township in Charter Oak, Iowa. They were married for 62 years until Benny passed away in 2008. They made their home on the family farm in Willow Township until their retirement in 1998.
Ruth was a very loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She enjoyed bowling, gardening (especially flowers), fishing and baking her special pancakes for children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing cards with her sisters on Sunday afternoon.
She attended church faithfully at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Ute, Iowa and then later at St. John Lutheran Church of Charter Oak, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Benny, son Tony, and granddaughter Jen. Also 4 sisters and 5 brothers.
Survivors left to cherish her memory include children Sue Menz of Westcliffe, Colorado, Bruce Schmieder of Charter Oak, Iowa, Joyce Lohoff of Walnut, Iowa, Connie Doudy and husband Bill of Denison, Iowa, her grandchildren and great grandchildren, two sisters Helen Bernes of Charter Oak, Iowa and Emma Langholdt of Denison, Iowa, sister-in-law- Amelia Wiegel and brother-in-law Del Kroll along with extended relatives and good friends.
Memorials may be directed to “The Lutheran Hour” and “Thy Strong Word” both radio programs on KDSN and to Crawford County Hospice in honor of Ruth.
