Ute, Iowa - Russell W. Mordhorst, 65, of San Francisco, California and formerly of Ute, Iowa passed away Thursday, November 28, 2013 in San Francisco. There will be a private family service. Russell Wayne Mordhorst was born October 18, 1948, in Ute, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Luetta (Christensen) Mordhorst. He passed away November 28, 2013, at the Tunnel Kindred Care Center, San Francisco, California. Russell was baptized into the Missouri Synod Lutheran faith on October 18, 1948 at the Crawford County Hospital, Denison, Iowa. He was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ute, Iowa April 7, 1963 by Pastor Lange. Growing up he was a member of the Ute Eager Beaver's 4-H Club for nine years with projects in swine and entomology. He graduated from Charter Oak-Ute High School in 1967 and attended college at Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri. He moved to San Francisco, California and was employed at Pacific Telephone Company. Russell especially enjoyed studying the Bible, going to see movies in the theartre, and his visits home to see his family in Iowa. He volunteered for various organizations in the bay area. Survivors left to cherish his memory include his parents, Elmer and Luetta Mordhorst of Denison, Iowa; one sister, Patricia Wallis and her husband, George of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, Donald Mordhorst and his wife, Teresa and Dennis Mordhorst and his wife, Barbara, all of Soldier, Iowa; and an aunt, Elsie Dutler of Holstein, Iowa; nine nieces and nephews; 20 great nieces and nephews; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, William and Clara Mordhorst; his maternal grandparents, Carl and Amanda Christensen; his uncles, LaVerne Mordhorst, Carl Dahl, and Harold Dutler; and his aunt, Ellen Dahl. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute.
