Obituary for Richard Hamann
Richard "Rich" Hamann, 84, of Anthon, Iowa, entered into the heavenly mansion of his Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, August 3, 2013, following a battle with melonoma cancer. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa which is six miles east, one mile south, then one mile east and one-half mile south of Anthon, with burial at St. Paul Cemetery, Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa. Visitation will be 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 6 at the church. The family will be present 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Condolences may be directed to the family at www.armstrongfuneral.com. Rich was born on January 28, 1929, near Anthon, Iowa, the son of Frank and Dora (Strackbein) Hamann.ξ He attended the Midway Country School through the eighth grade, graduating from Anthon High School with the class of 1946.ξ On September 5, 1948, he married Donna Hansen at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Midway, Iowa. With the dawn of 2013, Rich and Donna were given the gift of having shared a 67 year relationship and celebrating the year of their 65th wedding anniversary. Rich had extensive land and cattle holdings in the area and developed many lifelong friendships through his years of cattle buying and feeding across the country.ξ He had his registered brand in 5 states and purchased cattle in over 20 states.ξ He was an ambitious and determined man, took pride in his work, and was known for his many philanthropic endeavors in Anthon and the surrounding area such as building the Hamann Memorial Library. Mr. Hamann was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Midway, Iowa for 84 years, where he was baptized, confirmed and married and was especially supportive of its mission work.ξ He had held most of the church offices and was a member on the building committees of both the new church and parsonage.ξ Richard was very interested in the history of the Midway Cemetery and of St. Paul Lutheran Church and wrote a book about everyone buried in the cemetery during the first 110 years of its existence.ξ His grandparents were some of the founders of the cemetery, and his great grandfather was the first person buried in the cemetery.ξ Most of his ancestors are buried there as well. He has been an officer of many organizations over the years and also part of many other endeavors such as part owner of a radio station and co-owner of the Lakewood Ballroom and Convention Center in Lake View, Iowa, for 7 years. Rich and Donna were also blessed to travel to every state and all parts of each continent in the world including Antarctica and also a mission trip around the world, stopping at many mission stations. Survivors include his wife, Donna of Anthon; one daughter, Marcia Delperdang and her husband Carl "Marty" of South Sioux City, Nebraska; one son, Darwin Hamann and his wife, Sharon of Correctionville, Iowa; 6 grandchildren, Travis (Jennifer) Delperdang of Sioux City, Iowa, Amber (Kenny) Smallcomb of Sioux City, Iowa, and Courtney (Terence) Willson of Sioux City, Iowa, Jason (Julie) Hamann of Correctionville, Iowa, Lance (Jana) Hamann of Correctionville, Iowa, and Kattie Hamann of Clive, Iowa; 10 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Herald Hamann of St. Louis, Missouri, and Donald and his wife, Lorna of Anthon, Iowa; a sister, Pauline Feddersen of Anthon, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant sister. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established in memory of Rich.
