Obituary for Richard "Dick" Anderson
Richard Harland Anderson was born on September 19, 1942, in Appleton, MN, to Lloyd and Violet (Brown) Anderson. He grew up in Appleton, graduating from Appleton High School. He attended Hamlin University in St. Paul, MN, and then transferred to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis where he received his associate degree in Mortuary Science. He returned home to Appleton and took over the family's funeral home business for 5 years. On August 26, 1967, Dick and Harriett Willett were united in marriage. The couple and their son, Patrick moved to Danbury, IA, where Dick farmed with his grandfather. Farming became his lifelong career speckled with a wide variety of other endeavors. Among the longest additional career was as rural postal carrier, retiring from that profession in 2012. Dick was into all avenues of sports. He grew up playing athletics in high school and played intramural basketball in college. He cheered on his children and grandchildren at their athletic events. For over 40 years "Andy" officiated every sport possible, ranging from little league ball to high school athletics. He was an official at countless Iowa state tournaments and a member of the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. On a larger athletic scale, Dick was a true fan of all Minnesota athletic teams, including the Gophers, Vikings, Twins, Lynx, and Wild. He frequently listened to Sports Talk Radio. Dick was a very active member of the Danbury United Methodist Church. As leader of the children's youth group, he loved ministering to the children and did so with an energy which drew the children to their Wednesday meetings. He was a member of the Mapleton Gideons. He was an instigator in getting the Open Cupboard established in the area and was passionate about this project, going the extra mile to help as many people as he could possibly help. Dick's zeal for life and humanity and his incessant grin will be remembered by all who knew him. He looked forward to his many outings with his buddies. Family members left to treasure Dick's memory include Harriett, his wife of 46 years; his children, Patrick Anderson of Council Bluffs, Jason Anderson of Sioux City, and Shannon (Doug) Stewart of Sioux City; his 6 granddaughters, Emily, Ellen and Edie Anderson, and Olivia, Gabby, and Emily Stewart; His sisters, Carla Taurinskas of Mendota Heights, MN, and Leora Anderson of Cottage Grove, MN; and extended family members, Donna (Les) Allis of Sioux Falls, SD, Carl (Karen) Johnston of Jackson, TN, and Brad Rheingans of Appleton, MN.
