Phillip R. “Phil” Morgan, age 47, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at his residence of Mapleton, Iowa.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 24, 2018 at the United Methodist Church of Smithland, Iowa. Pastor Karen Handke will officiate; with Committal Services following in the Grant Township Cemetery of rural Rodney, Iowa. Military Rites will be conducted by the U.S. Naval Reserve and the Leslie F. Seaton Post No. 666 of the American Legion of Smithland, Iowa. A Visitation will be held one hour prior from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 24, 2018 at the United Methodist Church of Smithland, Iowa. The Armstrong - Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Condolences may be sent online www.armstrongfuneral.com.

Phillip Raymond “Phil” Morgan, the son of Walter and Betty (Van Norman) Morgan, was born September 29, 1970, in Onawa, IA. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at the Rodney United Church of Christ. Phil grew up in rural Castana, IA and attended school at Maple Valley graduating with the class of 1989. After high school, he worked for a year and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he was trained as a nonnuclear welder. Phil served during Operation Desert Storm.

Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he made his home in rural Mapleton, IA. On November 20, 1993, Phil was united in marriage to Kera Schoenherr at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Danbury, IA. The couple was blessed with four children: Kelsey, Kayla, Kolby and Katie. Phil was employed for 21 years with the Union Pacific Railroad.

Phil loved to work, hunt and wrestle with his kids. He was a family man and relished in spending time with them. His family always came first. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory include his wife Kera Morgan; daughters Kelsey Morgan, Kayla Morgan (Austin Hazard) and Katie Morgan; son Kolby Morgan; mother Betty Morgan; sister Roxane (Dar) Bales; brother Wally (Valerie) Morgan; brothers-in-law Kirtus (Doris) Schoenherr and Kyle (Jodi) Schoenherr; nieces Heather and Hailey Morgan, Amanda and Lakkin Schoenherr; nephews Dylan (Karley) Bales, Austin Bales, Wyatt and Nicholas Schoenherr; Zachery (Adel) Schoenherr; mother and father-in-law Susan and Jerry Schoenherr; aunts Linda Parr, Darla Westin, Doris (Jim) Mauch and Francis Morgan; uncles Rex (Deb) Morgan and Danny (Louise) Morgan; great aunt Anna Hinrickson; extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Walter Morgan; his maternal and paternal grandparents.
