Patricia Marie “Pat” (Fitzpatrick) Barry, was born on October 15, 1931, to Charles and Elizabeth (Hughes) Fitzpatrick, in Storm Lake, Iowa. Pat grew up in Storm Lake and Emmetsburg, Iowa. She graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School with the class of 1949 and furthered her education by enrolling in St. Joseph School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated in 1952 from nursing school and began her life long career as an R.N. working at various Sioux City hospitals until her marriage.

On April 20, 1955, Pat was united in marriage to Thomas “Tom” B. Barry in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Storm Lake, Iowa. The couple raised their five children and made their forever home in Danbury, Iowa.

Pat was employed as a nurse for Dr. Harrington in Danbury and then later at Hartley Memorial Hospital of Battle Creek, Iowa, from 1968 until 1976. She then became the school nurse at Maple Valley Public School of Mapleton, Iowa and retired from nursing at Maple Valley in 1989. Wherever Pat was, she was always sought out as the “Community Nurse” when any situation called for her attention. Her Irish insight gave her the unique gift of being a direct personality. This gift gave her the willingness and time to be a friend to “almost” everyone.

She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the St. Mary’s Rosary Society of Danbury. Pat would volunteer as a Eucharistic Minister for Mass and delivered communion to those who were shut-in. She was also a member of the Church Ladies Investment Club, Willow Vale Golf Course, the Nun’s on the Run, Danbury Ambulance Service, the American Legion Auxiliary of Danbury, along with various card clubs.

Survivors left to cherish her memory are her four children, Betsy (Larry) Hubert of Lamberton, MN, Kathleen (Rick) Friedman of Sioux Falls, SD, Robert (Pamela) Barry of Sioux City, IA, Jean Barry of Danbury, IA; grandchildren: Clayton (Randi) Hubert, Michael (Kiki) Hubert, Kelsey (Aaron) Hagen, Charlie (Tessa) Hubert, Danielle (Andrew) Block, Ross (Cheyenne) Friedman, Barry (Juliette) Friedman, Joel Barry, Meredith (Rob) Hill, Pat (Monica) Ferdig, and Lindsay (Jeremy) Cisco; 15 great grandchildren; brother, Joseph (Josephine) Fitzpatrick of Waukee, IA; sister-in-law, Midge Barry of Danbury, IA; extended family and friends.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas “Tom” Barry (September 23, 2009); son, Daniel Barry (1982); two brothers, Thomas H. (Naomi) Fitzpatrick and Robert (Marigene) Fitzpatrick.
