Orville L. Petersen Orville L. Petersen, 87, of rural Danbury, died Wednesday August 27, 2014, at home. The funeral service will be Friday, August 29, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church at Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa. Pastor Randy Cormeny will officiate. Orville Lavern Petersen was born May 26, 1927, to Clara (Jansen) and Thomas A. Petersen. He was raised on his family farm near Danbury. He attended country school, and graduated from Anthon High School. Orville began his career in agriculture after high school and continued farming until 2012. Orville loved telling the story about how he met the love of his life at a dance in Oto and forgot to get her last name. He eventually tracked her down and married Shirlee Hungerford 64 years ago on August 19, 1950. Orville was a life-long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church (Midway), rural Battle Creek. He was baptized, confirmed and married at St. Paul. He served as elder, secretary, Sunday school teacher and superintendent for the congregation. Orville and Shirlee were also youth leaders for many years. Although he did not have the opportunity to attend Iowa State, Orville was a loyal Cyclone fan. Prized possessions on display in his office include bolts from the goal post he helped take down with Garth and hundreds of fans at an ISU game in the old stadium and a signed game ball presented to him by Coach Hoiberg at the team's preseason stop in Carroll last year. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. One of Orville's proud accomplishments was learning to fly with godson, Kenton Petersen as his instructor. He took his first solo flight in 1982. Orville's grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of his life. He and Shirlee watched them participate and compete in sports and music events at local and state levels. He is survived by wife Shirlee of Danbury, daughters Valarie of Danbury and Vonise of Phoenix, son James (Lojean) of Ames, daughter-in-law Jane (Keith) Rodman Petersen of Carroll, granddaughter Sarah (Nathan) Petersen Buss and their children Joscelyn, Ireland, Laiken, Jewels and Macee of Ames; grandson Joshua (Jamie) Petersen of Omaha, granddaughter Hannah (Drew) Petersen Eanes and grandson Christopher Petersen (fiance Tera Tiefenthaler) of Kansas City, sister-in-law, Donna Petersen of Anthon and numerous nieces and nephews. Orville was preceded in death by his son, Garth and brothers; Elmer, Harold, Merlin, and Earl Petersen.
