Nora A. Flanigan, age 88, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away on January 26, 2021, at the Maple Heights Nursing Home of Mapleton, Iowa, surrounded by her children.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 30, 2021, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, Iowa, with Father Richard D. Ball Officiating. Committal will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery of Mapleton, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 29, 2021, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, Iowa. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, masks are required and social distancing rules apply during all services.

Nora was born on June 21, 1932, in Mapleton, Iowa, to Michael & Elizabeth (Zeiman) Schoenherr. She was a lifelong resident of the Mapleton, Ute and Charter Oak communities. Nora married Joseph P. Flanigan on September 17, 1955, in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School, Ute Public School & Barnes School of Cosmetology. Nora and her sister, Stella Dietz, operated a beauty shop in Charter Oak for many years. She worked at Tierney Drug, North Western Bell Telephone Company, and part time at Donna’s Beauty Shop and Mapleton Livestock. Nora was the bookkeeper at Flanigan Brother’s Grain Elevator from 1973 until she retired in 1996. She was a member and past president of the St. Mary’s Ladies Guild and co-chair of the St. Mary’s Centennial.
In her retirement, Nora enjoyed watching her grandchildren play sports, being in the Red Hatters, and playing cards and BINGO with her friends at the American Legion Hall.
Survivors include her daughter Mary (Robert) Nelson of Riverside, California, and their two children Beth Nelson (Roger Satorra) and their children Elena and Rafael, and Cory (Brittany) Nelson; son Martin (Lynnette) Flanigan of Mapleton, Iowa and their children Megan (Eric) Funk and their children Romy and Vance, Kelby Flanigan, Annie Flanigan, Mardi Jo (Luke) Ball and Marina Lacey (Marcus Croker); daughter Benita (Roger) Uhl of Mapleton, Iowa and their son Chad (Randi) Uhl and their children Mia and Lawson; Joann (Timothy) Treiber of Danbury, Iowa and their daughters Tiffany (Dylan) Schmidt and their children Caden, Taytum and Tucker, Steffany (Austin) Bettin and their children Carter and Addisyn, and Karly Treiber (Brody Kafton); and son Michael (Tammy) Flanigan of Mapleton, Iowa and their children Alexander (Lindsey) Flanigan, Angie (Andy) Sass and their children John and Elsie, Joseph (Alex) Flanigan and their children Beau & Cam, and Shawn (Jensen) Flanigan.
Nora was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Flanigan; her parents, Michael & Elizabeth (Zeiman) Schoenherr; sisters: Theresa Schoenherr, Sister Concilia Schoenherr, Bernice Hagemann, Sister Eileen Schoenherr, Clara Pewich, Rita Weber, and Stella Dietz; and brothers, Alvy Schoenherr and Paul Schoenherr.
