Melvin Louis Schrader, the son of Louis J. and Ida W. (Bohlmann) Schrader, was born on October 29, 1926, in Battle Creek, Iowa. He grew up northeast of Mapleton, Iowa, on the family farm. Melvin started his education in country school and later graduated from Mapleton High School with the class of 1944.

Upon graduating from high school, Mel continued to farm alongside his father Louis until he was drafted into the United States Army. He was honorably discharged after serving his country from 1953-1955. He returned home and commenced in farming the family farm in Mapleton alongside his family.

On June 15, 1961, Mel was united into marriage to Selma Marie (Hinz) Pope in Ponca, Nebraska. The couple settled on the family farm and appropriated the family farming operation in the early 1970’s, and shared his love of the land and livestock with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mel was proud of his Century Farm and gratefully received the award in 2020. A farmer through and through, Mel would usually arrive when things weren’t working and make the calls until they were again. In his mid-years, Mel enjoyed traveling with his wife Selma. He also treasured spending time with his family, crossword puzzles, and good hand of euchre (although he would call a bid with little or no trump). Mel was a faithful member of the St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Mapleton and the Loren Hollister Post #496 of the American Legion of Mapleton.

He will always be remembered by his grandchildren for his “Grandpa Melvin Handshake”. Until we meet again “See ya in the funnies.”

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family to be used for a charity of their choice.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Selma Schrader of Mapleton, IA; children Dave (Bambi) Schrader of Story City, IA and Anne Livermore of Mapleton, IA; grandchildren: Matthew (Chelsea) Schrader of Mapleton, IA, Zachary (Jacquelyn) Schrader of Mapleton, IA, Anna (Cody) Kingsford of Sioux City, IA, Kim (Jeff) Fineran of Manilla, IA, Karen (Jason) Wood of Mapleton, IA, Jon (Claudia) Livermore of Early, IA, Kyle Livermore of Sioux City, IA, Bryan Livermore of New York City, NY, Maggie Livermore of Mapleton, IA, and Danny Livermore of Mapleton, IA; great grandchildren: Draven, Seth, Lexi, Erin, Colby, Ayla, Schalee, Harper, Addison, Charlie, Liam, Logan, and Laycin; great-great grandchildren: Faith, Rustin, and Hudson; extended family and friends.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Ida Schrader; infant brother Jessie Schrader; and son-in-law Dennis Livermore.
