A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 25, 2017, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, of Mapleton, Iowa. Father Richard D. Ball will officiate; with committal services following in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery of Mapleton, Iowa. A visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 24, 2017, with a Rosary Service held at 5:00 p.m., and a Vigil Service held at 7:30 p.m., at the Armstrong – Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa. Louise Elizabeth Sander, one of 13 children born to Joseph and Barbara (Theobald) Dirksen, was born on July 27, 1921, in rural Mapleton, IA. She graduated 8th grade from St. Mary’s Catholic School in 1935 and Mapleton Public School in 1939.
In 1942, Louise married Robert L. Sander of Ute, IA. She was blessed with three daughters Barbara, Patricia, and Diane. In 1948, Louise and her daughters moved to Danbury, IA, to live with her brother Joseph A. Dirksen. In 1953, they all moved to a farm that Joseph bought north of Mapleton, IA.
Louise was a detailed seamstress, making many dresses, formals, and children’s clothing. In her past time, Louise enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, square dancing and embroidery. She relished spending time with her daughters and their families.
Left to cherish her memory are her Daughter Barbara Castle and family: granddaughter Tammy (Mike) Flanigan of Mapleton, IA and family: Alex (Lindsey) of Omaha, NE, Angie (Andy) and their children John and Elsie Sass of Mapleton, IA, Joe (Alex) and son Beau Flanigan of Mapleton, IA and Shawn Flanigan of Ames, IA; granddaughter Teri Kay (Tom) Tusha of Clear Lake, IA and sons Tanner of Des Moines, IA, and Tucker of Clear Lake, IA; granddaughter Holly Brezina and children Sara and Will of Omaha, NE; grandson Bill (Kathy) Castle and daughters Ellen and Audrey of Boone, IA, Erin of Iowa City, IA; grandson Travis (Lori) Castle of Treynor, IA and children Ty of Maryville, MO, Trey of Ames, IA and Tori of Treynor, IA; grandson Ryan (Lora) Castle of Round Rock, TX and daughters Jaide of Round Rock, TX and Helena of Austin, TX; Daughter Patty Trupp of Bullhead City, AZ and family: grandson Robert (Debbie Betty) Moorhouse of Colorado Springs, CO, and son Austin Moorhouse of Clarksville, TN; granddaughter Cynthia (Mike) Simpson of Colorado Springs, CO and sons Chad (Bri) Simpson and daughter Kensington, of Colorado Springs, CO, and son Chase Simpson of Colorado Springs, CO and daughter Debra K. (Dan) Spilman of Colorado Springs, CO and their daughter Jessica of Dayton, OH; Daughter Diane (George) Carpenter of Branson, MO and family: grandson Dan (Kim) Thompson of Osceola, MO, and sons Marek Thompson of Emporia, KS, and Jade of Osceola, MO; step-grandson Randy (Lisa) Carpenter of Olathe, KS and family: Cody of Kansas City, KS, Zach of Vancouver, WA; step-grandson Rich (Doreen) Carpenter of Parkville, MO and children Samantha and Jake Colombia, MO; step-granddaughter Lenee (Louie) Pfeiler of Omaha, NE and son Hunter Carpenter of Lincoln, NE; and step-grandson Scott Carpenter of Jeonju, South Korea.
Louise is preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Barbra Dirksen; siblings: Pearl Dickman, Clara Schleimer, Ed Dirksen, Albina (sister Ronald), George Dirksen, Anna Oberreuter, Rosina Miller, Leo Dirksen, Joseph Dirksen, Jr., Mary Arney, and Ronald Dirksen; sons-in-law Bill Castle and Ramon Trupp.
