Lorna G. Hamann was born on June 21, 1931, at home in Danbury, Iowa. Lorna attended Anthon High School graduating with the Class of 1949. She was a fierce competitor, enjoying her play as a guard in six-on-six basketball.
On June 26, 1949, Lorna married the love of her life, Donald Hamann, at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Midway. They enjoyed and celebrated each other for 76 plus years until Don’s death in January. To this union, four children were born, Deborah, Stanley, Ellen, and Jennifer.
After marrying Don, Lorna made the move to the farm with no running water and questionable heat! This was the first home she created for her husband and children, dedicating herself to that work for a lifetime. She had many tales from the farm that included critters, frozen water, and soot. Although her early meals for the family were often beans and wieners, over time she became a wonderful cook, homemaker, and most importantly to her, mother. Family favorites were her crab salad, chocolate sauce, and her ability to add green olives to many dishes.
She loved to have music on while working around the house and was known for being meticulous in all she did. Lorna was the constant for the family, the steadying force that could be counted on in all situations. She had a great sense of humor with a quick wit that made us laugh. She also loved dessert, teaching us all that no matter the meal, there’s always room for something sweet. Lorna enjoyed flowers, watching sports, golfing, and playing bridge. She also took great pleasure later in life watching the birds outside her kitchen window.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Deborah (Ariel) Carman, Stanley (Debra) Hamann, Ellen (Mike) Keenan, and Jennifer (Kippy) Hamann; 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 2 great, great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Lorna was preceded in death by her husband Don Hamann; her parents Ernest and Frances Towers; in-laws Frank and Dora Hamann; sisters Patricia Davis and Diane Beacom.
