Obituary for Lewis Ahlwardt
PITTSBURG, CA - Lewis A. Ahlwardt, 85, passed away peacefully April 13, 2013, at ξCypress Meadows Assisted Living Home. He was the husband of Evelyn (Welte) Ahlwardt formerly of Danbury, Iowa. ξ A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 28, at 12:30 p.m. at the Danbury Catholic Cemetery at Danbury, Iowa with Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Military graveside honors will be provided by the American Legion Carlson-Frum Post #336 of Danbury. Armstrong Funeral Home of Danbury and Mapleton is in charge of the arrangements. on line condolences may be directed to the family at www.armstrongfuneral.com. Born and raised in Danbury, Lewie graduated from Danbury Public School with the class of 1944. ξAfter graduation served his country in the Navy. ξIt was after he returned home in 1947 that a cousin introduced Lewie to her friend, Evelyn Welte. ξLewie and Evelyn were married on June 24, 1948, at St. Patrick's Church in Danbury. Lewie worked for the Danbury Post Office from April 1948 until October 1956 when they moved, with the first two of what was to be six children, to Concord, CA, towing a ξtrailer with all their belongings behind their 1950 Pontiac. ξHe continued with the post office in Concord and delivered early morning newspapers for a number of years. He retired from the post office in June 1988 with 40 years of service. ξξEvelyn passed away in 2007. Lewie enjoyed golfing, fishing and gardening. ξAbove all, he loved spending time with his family. Lewie is survived by five children, Sam, Steve (Kitty), Scott (Yvonne), Susan (Rick) and Stacy; 14 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and a sister, Betty. He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn (2007) and daughter Sheila (1996). In lieu of flowers please make donations to Breast Cancer Research.
