Obituary for Leslie "Gene" Johnson
Gene L. Johnson, 92, of Chico,California and formerly of Soldier, Iowa passed away Monday, June 22, 2015, at California Park Rehab Hospital in Chico, California. The funeral service will be Saturday, June 27 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute, Iowa, with Pastor Marcus Manley officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery at Ute with military graveside honors provided by the American Legion Aaby Post #442 and the VFW Post #5605, both of Ute. Armstrong Funeral Home of Ute has been entrusted with the arrangements. Gene L. Johnson was born May 23, 1923, near Soldier, Iowa, the son of Oscar Adam and Gertrude (Hemminger) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed In the Soldier Lutheran Church. He graduated from Moorhead High School in 1940 and then went to college in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1943, he wanted to enlist in the Navy, but was color blind so that meant he could only enlist in the Army. After training, he was sent to Europe and fought in the Battle of the Ardennes and the Battle of the Bulge. After that he fought in the Colmar Pocket in France and from there to the Battle of the Ruhr in Germany. After the war he married Evelyn Hosfiel and they moved to the Los Angeles area. He spent the next forty-three years selling Fords. He was one of the top salesman in the United States for several years. He was blessed with good health and was able to have a long retirement and to travel the world. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Chico, California. Those survivors left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Connie Baxter and Linda Johnson and her husband, Gary, all of Chico, California; three grandchildren, Anna Koops and husband, Geoffrey, of San Francisco, California, also Dane Baxter and his wife, Ashley and Christian Baxter and Kendra of Chico, California. He is also survived by two great granddaughters, Ramona Koops and Brynlee Baxter, as well as beloved nephew, Roger Johnson of Ute, Iowa and Niece Bonnie Woods of Billinghan, Washington; and the Steffen Family from Charter Oak, Eric Johnson and Dr. Mark Parker from Dallas, Texas and the Scott Johnson family along with cherished cousins, Leonard and Wayne Johnson. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; brother Elvin Johnson and sister-in-law, Ruby Johnson; one sister Leona Lariviere; and nephews, Rodney and Kevin Johnson. ξ
