Leo “Buddy” Kane was born January 17, 1934, the son of J.F. and Agnes (Gorman) Kane. He was raised in the Danbury area, attended St. Patrick’s Grade School and graduated from Danbury Catholic High School in 1951. Throughout his life he was known to many as “Buddy”.

On February 11, 1956, Leo was united in marriage to Bonita Schleimer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton, IA. The couple was to start their chosen field of farming that spring, but Uncle Sam had other plans. Bud was drafted at that time into the US Navy, stationed at US Naval Air Base at Alameda, CA. Upon his discharge, he returned to Mapleton to start farming, an occupation he thoroughly enjoyed, and where livestock feeding was a prominent feature in his farming career. The couple were blessed with five children, Cindy, Tom, Joe, Mary Jo and Lauri. He continued to farm until his retirement in the spring of 2014.

As a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton, he was very active as Eucharistic Minister, Lector and Usher. He also served as a member of the Parish Council for many years. Buddy was a member of the Knights of Columbus, having joined the organization in 1954. He was also a member of the American Legion, Hollister Post #496.

Mr. Kane was a member of the Mapleton Flying Club, having acquired a Private Pilot’s License in 1969. He served as the President of the Club for several years. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Farmers Coop of Mapleton. He was an active member of the Board of Directors for the Monona County Cattlemen’s Association for many years.

Bud was very proud of his five children. Through his example, they learned high work ethics and good moral values. Many a summer he gathered them together on the front lawn, teaching them the correct way to swing a baseball bat. Idleness was not known to him. He was a self-taught mechanic, eager to take apart and put together, whatever occasion.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Bonita of Mapleton, son Joe (Michelle) Kane of Mapleton, daughters Cindy (Terry) Bennigsdorf of Altoona, Mary Jo (Brad) Hanson of Castana, and Lauri (Chris) Webner of Panora; grandchildren Dan (Liz) Bennigsdorf, David (Ashley) Bennigsdorf, Shawn Bennigsdorf, Niki (Adam) Vogel, Robbie Gustin, Chelsie Kane, Beau (Jen) Hanson, Sam, Ted and Glen Hanson, Luke, Matthew and Grace Webner; great granddaughters Peyton Hanson, Olivia Bennigsdorf, Avery and Rylee Jo Vogel, sister-in-law Paula Schleimer.

Buddy was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Tom Kane.
