He was one of two children born to M. Peter and E. Opal (Yockey) Madsen. He graduated from Anthon High School with the class of 1954. He worked for a short time at Gothier Mink Farm at Anthon and Westendorf Manufacturing in Smithland, Iowa. His life career, however, was in farming, a job that provided Larry with a deep sense of pride. On April 10, 1960, he was united in marriage to Barbara Finch Elving at the First Baptist Church in Alcester, South Dakota. Together, Larry and Barb had six children, three daughters and three sons. During a 10 year span, they also welcomed 30 foster children in to their home. Larry's passion in life was gardening, both vegetables and flowers. He loved receiving the numerous seed catalogs and viewed them with a spirit of excitement and anticipation. It was said that if he could find a spot, he would grow something on it! Above all, Larry, however, was all about the deep love he had for his family, a tradition that is carried on in his children. He was a member of the Anthon United Methodist Church. Those family members left to honor Larry are Barb, his wife of 54 years; his six children, Wendy Hanson and her husband, Dale of Centennial, Colorado, Penny Rosso and her husband, Larry of Omaha, Nebraska, Crystal Dewey and her husband, Kenny of Vancleave, Mississippi, Tim Madsen and his wife, Tina and Peter Madsen and his wife, Jolynn, all of Holstein, Iowa, and John Madsen of Anthon, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and one sister, Jean Bradshaw and her husband, Bob of Omaha, Nebraska; along with other extended family members.
