Karen Dianne Hanson, was born on May 30, 1939, in Yankton, South Dakota, to Lloyd and Josephine (Peterson) Sorensen. She grew up in Elk Point, South Dakota until the family relocated to Vermillion, South Dakota, where Karen graduated from Vermillion High School with the class of 1957.
In November of 1957, Karen was united into marriage to John Bliss. The couple were blessed with four children, Kevin, Nancy, Jamie and David.
Karen worked outside of the home at Aalfs Manufacturing and the central kitchen for Sioux City Community Schools both of Sioux City, Iowa. The family lost John after a brief illness on January 18, 1975.
After going to a street dance in Rodney, Iowa, Karen met a farmer named Leonard Hanson. The couple were married on December 10, 1978. Karen welcomed a step son, Randy Hanson.
To say Karen loved her family is under estimated. She adored spending time with her family taking family vacations together along with spoiling her grandchildren and watching them grow. She helped Leonard on the farm and enjoyed feeding bottle calves. Karen was known for having a soft spot for animals of any kind taking in any stray pet that came her way. She enjoyed playing cards and the occasional trip to the casino where she was lucky at both.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Leonard Hanson of Smithland, Iowa; children, Kevin (Julie) Bliss of Vermillion, South Dakota, Nancy Mulford of Sioux City, Iowa, Jamie (John) Fister of Rodney, Iowa, David (Suzanne) Bliss of Smithville, Missouri; step son Randy (Sheila) Hanson of Las Vegas, Nevada; eight grandchildren and three step grandchildren; one great grandchild and four step great grandchildren; brothers, Lloyd (Helen) Sorensen and James (Neva) Sorensen; sisters, Adeline Street, Emma (Ed) Drissen, Bonnie ( Mark Winegar) Sorensen, Trudy (Mark Lorenzen) Sorensen, Linda Sorensen; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, John Bliss; son-in-law, James Mulford; sister, JoAnn Bernard; and brother-in-law, Eric Street.
