
Joyce LuAnn (Riddle) Dethlefs, age 92, of Sioux City, Iowa, (formerly of Castana, IA & Onawa, IA) passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at the Westwood Specialty Care of Sioux City, Iowa.
A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., with visitation held one hour prior from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at the Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken will officiate. Committal Services will follow in the Saint Clair Township Cemetery of Ute, Iowa.

Joyce LuAnn (Riddle) Dethlefs, the daughter of Fred and Florence (Schlensig) Riddle, was born on October 4, 1931, in Solider, Iowa. She grew up in the rural Soldier area and graduated from Ute Community School.
On June 6, 1950, Joyce was united in marriage to Henry A. Dethlefs, and the couple were blessed with five children. The family farmed south of Castana, Iowa, until Henry passed away in a tragic automobile accident. Joyce then moved the family to Onawa, Iowa, where she worked for the local dry cleaner for 10 years. The family then relocated to Sioux City, Iowa, where Joyce worked for Cargill as a bookkeeper for 27 years before retiring.
Joyce enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing cards, and loved nature especially birds. Joyce treasured spending time with her family. She loved every birthday and holiday watching her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren grow.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Marvin (Kathy) Dethlefs of Sioux City, IA, and Karlyn (Kenneth) Bursell of Red Oak, IA; grandchildren Henry Ray Dethlefs of Dakota Dunes, SD, Kelli (Gabriela) Cortez of Sioux City, IA, Kevin Dethlefs of Omaha, NE, and Kara (Deryan) Banks of Sioux Falls, SD; seven great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; extended family and friends.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Florence Riddle; husband Henry A. Dethlefs (1964); children Alan Dethlefs and Judy Dethlefs and baby girl Dethlefs; brothers Harry Riddle and Clifford Riddle; sisters Maxine (Howard) Nystrom, and Shirley (Alvern) Hopp.
