Joel “Joe” Burroughs, the son of Francis and Freda (Griffin) Burroughs, was born on July 16, 1950, in Shenandoah, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm outside of Ute, Iowa, and graduated from Charter Oak - Ute High School with the class of 1969.

On August 1, 1970, Joe was united in marriage to Helen Dean in the United Methodist Church of Ute. Shortly after, Joe enlisted into the United States Army. After completing basic training, Joe was stationed overseas in Germany for two years before returning to Ft. Polk Army base in Louisiana.

After being honorably discharged from the Army, Joe worked as a hired hand for local farmers in the Churdan, Iowa area. He then started his career in the janitorial field at Western Iowa Tech Community College of Sioux City, Iowa. This career would also take him to Corona, New Mexico, where he work as a school janitor until he retired to Soldier, Iowa, in 2017.

Joe was not one to just sit around in a rocking chair. He enjoyed helping others by taking them to appointments, mowing lawns, and helping on the family farm. Joe also liked gardening, and was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church of Charter Oak, where he loved to lift his voice to praise his Lord and Savior.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Jeff Burroughs of Corona, NM, Michelle (Jimmie) Amsden of Manning, IA, Melissa (Fiancé Troy Peterson) Burroughs of Sioux City, IA; four grandchildren; brothers Robert “Bob” Burroughs of Ute, IA, David (Mary) Burroughs of Sioux City, IA, Tony (Kathy) Burroughs of Sioux Falls, SD, Raymond Burroughs of Ute, IA, Richard Burroughs of Marian, IA, Dan (Jane) Burroughs of Ute, IA; sister of Ruth Aken of Montrose, CO; many nieces, nephews, and special friend Hillary.
