Joel “Joe” Burroughs, the son of Francis and Freda (Griffin) Burroughs, was born on July 16, 1950, in Shenandoah, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm outside of Ute, Iowa, and graduated from Charter Oak - Ute High School with the class of 1969.
On August 1, 1970, Joe was united in marriage to Helen Dean in the United Methodist Church of Ute. Shortly after, Joe enlisted into the United States Army. After completing basic training, Joe was stationed overseas in Germany for two years before returning to Ft. Polk Army base in Louisiana.
After being honorably discharged from the Army, Joe worked as a hired hand for local farmers in the Churdan, Iowa area. He then started his career in the janitorial field at Western Iowa Tech Community College of Sioux City, Iowa. This career would also take him to Corona, New Mexico, where he work as a school janitor until he retired to Soldier, Iowa, in 2017.
