Obituary for Joan L. Siebersma

Joan L. Siebersma, age 89, of Ankeny, Iowa, (formerly of Mapleton, Iowa) passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at the home of her daughter in Ankeny, Iowa.


A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery of Mapleton, Iowa. Lay Speaker James De Kruif will officiate.

Joan Lois Siebersma was born on April 14, 1934, in Boyden, Iowa, the daughter of Joe and Elizabeth (Van Veldhuizen) Van Velzen. She was raised and educated in Boyden and graduated from Boyden High School with the class of 1952.


On November 2, 1956, Joan married Cornie Siebersma in Worthington, Minnesota. They made their home in Sheldon, Iowa, where she was employed as a bookkeeper for various businesses. They later moved to Mapleton, Iowa and she managed the drapery department at Reed’s Furniture Store and Carpet Specialties. In 1985 they relocated to Santa Cruz, California, where she was employed as the manager of the drapery workroom for Haber Furniture Store. In 1992 the couple made their final move to Ankeny, Iowa, where she worked at Burgin Drapery Workroom, as office manager at Sky’s the Limit Crane Service and as a greeter at Hy-Vee Food Stores.


Joan utilized her exquisite sewing skills in the making of many wedding and bridesmaid’s dresses, quilts, blankets and anything that involved fabric. She had the unique experience of making all of the window coverings for the movie set of Bridges of Madison County. Joan loved sporting events and took pride in attending her grandchildren’s activities. She also enjoyed watching sports on TV and doing puzzles with her friends. Family was always first with Joan and she especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.


She is survived by her son Terry and his wife Kate of Mapleton, IA; daughter Judi and her husband Dennis Wieben of Ankeny, IA; seven grandchildren: Amy Christiansen, Jenny Kenney, LeAnn Siebersma, Brad Siebersma, Jeff Siebersma, Jamie Jo Wieben and Nicky Christophersen; 12 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.


She was preceded in death by her husband Cornie Siebersma, parents Joe and Elizabeth Van Velzen, brothers Henry and Clarence Van Velzen, infant son Dewayne and infant daughter Jocquelyn.
