Joan Carlson, age 81, of Smithland, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center of Omaha, Nebraska.
A Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Life held at 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at the Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa.

Joan Elizabeth Carlson the daughter of Mildred (Dunham) and Leonard Bentall, was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, on June 26, 1943. She grew up in Norwalk, California and graduated from Santa Fe High School with the class of 1960.
On December 30, 1961, Joan married Jackie “Jack” Carlson, in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1970, the couple relocated to Sioux City, Iowa, with their four children, Jill, Jackie, Jeri, and Jason. In 1978, the family moved to a farm near Castana, Iowa, until 2003 when Joan moved into Smithland, Iowa. Joan was a member of the Smithland Methodist Church.
Over the years you may remember Joan’s smile as she worked for Timber Ridge, Wimpy’s, Runts, Webber’s, Green Acers, Oto Quick Stop, Maple Heights and IGA.
Joan loved horses, dirt bikes, dune buggies, was an avid Washington Red Skins, Iowa Hawkeye football and NASCAR fan, high school & college wrestling, and fishing in Pickstown, South Dakota. Joan made many lifelong friends throughout the years from work and playing her favorite slot machine Wicked Winnings.
Those left to treasure her memory are her children Jill (Mark) Horsley of Odebolt, IA, Jackie Hogan of Smithland, IA, Jeri Carlson of Council Bluffs, IA, and Jason (Ann) Carlson of Le Mars, IA; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; brother Warren “Rennie” (Carol) Simmons of Myrtle Beach, SC; extended family and friends.
Joan was preceded in death by husband Jack Carlson (1999); parents Mildred and Leonard Bentall; and step daughter Michelle Carlson.
