Mapleton, Iowa - Howard J. Uhl, 95, of Hampton, Iowa and formerly of Mapleton, Iowa passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at Franklin Country View Nursing Home in Hampton. Services were held Saturday, April 9 in Hampton. Services now will be held Saturday, April 16 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. with a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery at Mapleton with military honors provided by the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton. The family is receiving condolences on line at www.armstrongfuneral.com.
Howard J. Uhl was born October 25, 1920, in Mapleton, Iowa, to Jesse and Eleanor (Schleis) Uhl. He graduated from Maple Grove Country School at Mapleton, Iowa. Howard served his country in the United States Army during World War II.
Howard married Beverly Owens on January 12, 1947, in Ute, Iowa, she passed away August 31, 1983, and then he married Delores Larson on October 6, 1984, in Mapleton, Iowa. Howard worked with heavy equipment most of his life, building interstate highways. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and American Legion. Howard enjoyed gardening, reading and music.
He is survived by his wife Delores of Hampton, daughter Connie Lynn Uhl (Rand Hill) of Redmond, Oregon, son Randy (Shirley) Uhl of Ellensburg, Washington, son Doug (Brenda) Uhl in Orange City, daughter Lori Uhl (Bob Harms) Sioux City, grandchildren Carrina (Uhl) Huss, Janessa Uhl-Carper, Darin Uhl, Tyler Delashmutt, Ashley Uhl, step son Jerry (Teresa) Jensen of Charles City, step son Jeff (Patty) Jensen of Alexander, step son Scott (Joni) Jensen of Alexander, step daughter Sheryl (Jay) Schumann of Hampton, seven grandchildren and “one on the way”, fourteen step grandchildren, twenty step great grandchildren, sister Katherine (Gail) Cadwell of Fair Oaks, California, sister Lucille (Arlie) Larson of Smithland, sister Phyllis (Vince) Ahart of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, brother Richard (Jane) Uhl of Pickerington, Ohio, brother Lawrence Uhl of Sparta, North Carolina, brother Gary (Jeanne) Uhl of Elkhart.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Beverly, brothers Clyde and Paul and sisters Darlene, Joy and Carol.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Hampton Senior Center or a charity of your choice.
