Obituary for Howard D. Anderson
Howard D. Anderson Mapleton, Iowa - Howard D. Anderson, 93, of Mapleton, Iowa and formerly of Ute and Soldier, Iowa passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton. The funeral Mass will be Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton with Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery at Ute with military graveside honors provided by the American Legion Aaby Post #442 of Ute and the Ute V.F.W. Post #5605. Visitation will be Monday, May 12 after 4:00 p.m. with the Vigil Wake service at 7:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton with Deacon Ray Rosburg officiating. Howard Dexter Anderson was born June 8, 1920, at Soldier, Iowa the third eldest of seven children born to Albert and Clara (Knudson) Anderson. He attended country school. Howard's father died when Howard was only eight years old and his mother died when he was just 16, thus he helped raise his younger siblings. As World War II loomed over America, Howard was drafted into the United States Army. He entered October 13, 1941 and served as a Combat Infantryman in Germany. In the heat of a battle just a couple days prior to Armistice Day, Howard was wounded by a sniper shot and nearly died but was rescued unconscious. He was transferred for medical care, and due to complications of his injuries his right arm was amputated. For his valor, he received the Purple Heart and was honorably discharged November 10, 1945. He was a life long member of both the V.F.W. Post #5605 of Ute and D.A.V. as well as a member of the American Legion Aaby Post #442 of Ute. With determination, Howard went on to live a very active life. He ran a cafe, the "Snack Shop" in Soldier, sold seed corn, and went to Auctioneer's School. On November 4, 1948, Howard was united in matrimony to Catherine Helen Dixon at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ute. Along with farming, milking cows, and the couple raising 10 children, Howard continued to work as an auctioneer at farm sales, the Ute Sale Barn, and worked years at the Dunlap Livestock Auction. He was also a cattle buyer for local farmers and would often haul livestock. Howard was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ute and upon moving to Mapleton became a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church there. He was a past member of the Charter Oak-Ute School Board. He volunteered for years as a 4-H leader for the Eager Beavers 4-H Club at Ute and loved going to the Monona County Fair and working with his kids. He even went as far to jokingly tell his family it was their "summer vacation". Those family members left to honor Howard are Catherine, his wife of 65 years; four sons and their wives, Edward and Rosemary Anderson of Shelby, Iowa, James and Sue Anderson of Omaha, Nebraska, William and Nancy Anderson of Louisville, Texas, and Thomas and Paula Anderson of Strausburg, Colorado; five daughters, Beverly Warner of Cleveland, Texas, Judith Milone and her husband, Tony, Ardith Morello, and Patricia Anderson, all of Omaha, Nebraska, and Mary Freml and her husband, Rich of Harlan, Iowa; a son-in-law, Kirk Schatzle and his wife, Deb of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, Howard was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa Anderson Schatzle; a son-in-law, Jerry Warner; five brothers, Leland, Quintin, Warren, Bernard, and Gene; and one sister, Zelda .
