Obituary for Hollis Lillie
Obituary Hollis O. Lillie Anthon, Iowa - Hollis O. Lillie, 87, of Anthon, Iowa passed away peacefully at his home Thursday, January 2, 2014, with his family by his side. The funeral service will be Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon with Pastor Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in the Oto Cemetery with military graveside honors provided by the American Legion Henry V. McKenna Post #651 of Oto. Visitation will be Monday, January 6 after 5:30 p.m. with the family present from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and the prayer service at 6:30 p.m. all at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. The family is receiving condolences on line at www.armstrongfuneral.com. Hollis Owen Lillie was born at Oto, Iowa, the son of Harold Otto and Rosella "Babe" (Downing) Lillie. He grew up and attended school in the Anthon area. He enlisted in the United States Navy entering January 5, 1945. He served his country proudly during World War II, the Korean War, the Cuban Conflict, and Vietnam. He was stationed on ships all over the world traveling as far as North Africa. On July 28, 1967, he was honorably discharged. Hollis married Jan Bernt Girardin in Hot Springs, South Dakota December 6, 1972. As a result of his military training, Hollis prospered as a manager. The first was at the VFW in North Platte, NE, then at the Interstate 80 Rest Area in Fort Steele, WY, and later at multiple businesses in the Columbus, NE area. They lived on the farm near Columbus from 1974 to 2011. They bought their current home in Anthon and moved back October 8, 2011. Hollis was a 54 year member of the American Legion Henry V. McKenna Post #651 of Oto. His favorite hobby, without a doubt, was fishing while relaxing and enjoying a cold beer. He never turned down a chance to to head out on the fishing boat at his favorite fishing spot at Lake McConaughy in Nebraska or anywhere else for that matter. Those survivors left to celebrate their memories of Hollis include his wife, Jan; a daughter, Dawn Craig and her husband, Chris of Stratton, CO; two sons, Doug Girardin and Rob Girardin and his wife, Kris, all of Columbus, NE; one son-in-law, Ronald Larson of Oto, IA; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie King of Kingsley, IA and Ila McDermott of Oto, IA; two brothers, Gerald Lillie and his wife, Joy, of Pensacola, FL and Raphel Lillie and his wife, Diane, of Mankato, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews. Hollis was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and "Babe" Downing; two daughters, Sandy Nickelsen and Susan Larson; a grandson, Todd Larson; a grand daughter, Nadine Sandra Miller; and a brother, Richard Lillie.
