Helma was baptized in 1918 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1933 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township located near her family home in Soldier Township. She grew up on the family farm and attended parochial school at Immanuel Lutheran Church through the 8th grade.

After her graduation from 8th grade, Helma continued helping with the family farm. On June 27, 1943, Helma married the love of her life, Raymond William Engelke at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
