Helma Augusta Engelke was born on August 4, 1918, in Ricketts, Iowa. She was the daughter of Frederich and Mathilde (Fester) Wodtke. Helma was baptized in 1918 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1933 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township located near her family home in Soldier Township. She grew up on the family farm and attended parochial school at Immanuel Lutheran Church through the 8th grade.

After her graduation from 8th grade, Helma continued helping with the family farm. On June 27, 1943, Helma married the love of her life, Raymond William Engelke at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple were blessed with two children, a daughter Donna and a son Dale. Helma and Raymond shared 30 years together before Raymond passed in 1973. They moved to the family farm in 1955 and the family farm still remains there.

A lifelong Lutheran, Helma enjoyed being active in her church. She participated in LWML, St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church Quilting Committee, Cradle Roll, and was a member of the Braille Transcription Committee. She loved gardening, canning vegetables, and fresh cut lilacs and peonies could always be found in her home. She enjoyed playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, and crocheting and often gifted her crocheted pieces to her family and friends. She also belonged and was active in her local neighborhood club.

Helma was always thinking of others. She was fondly remembered for her humble, kind and gentle ways.
