Obituary for Helen L. Pithan
Helen L. Pithan Danbury, IA - Helen L. Pithan, 88, of Danbury, Iowa passed away Friday August 2, 2013 at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton. The funeral service is Tuesday, August 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Danbury United Methodist Church. Burial is in the Danbury Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday after 4:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Armstrong Funeral Home of Danbury and Mapleton is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be directed to the family at www.armstrongfuneral.com. Helen Lucille Pithan was born October 10, 1924, in Danbury, Iowa to Franklin and Clara (Mehrings) Wenger. She was baptized in the Danbury Methodist Church as an infant. Helen attended grade school at Garfield No. 4 in Ida County and graduated high school at Danbury Public High in 1942, where she was active in music, plays, and on the annual staff. After high school, she received a certificate to teach country school at WUC in Lemars, Iowa. She was active in 4-H serving as the County President and received the "I Dare You" Award. She along with her sister, Marie, won the County Demonstration Contest and was eligible to go to the State Fair, but the State Fair was canceled that year because of the war. She was a member of the Danbury United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Church Council and Choir, the Danbury Women's Club, and an active member of the Danbury Corn Days activities for many years. She was also an active member of the "Nuns on the Run" for several years and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and spent many hours volunteering at the Maple Heights Care Center in Mapleton. Along with teaching rural school, Helen served as a teacher's aid at the Danbury Center for the Maple Valley School District. She was employed at Langel Hardware, Crilly Brothers, Colbert's Grocery, and the Danbury Review. Helen married George Harmen Pithan on February 14, 1949, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Danbury. To this union four sons were born, George Allan, John Bradley, Gregory Franklin, and Patrick Wenger Pithan. George and Helen loved to go visit with friends and go ballroom dancing. George passed away July 1, 1994. Survivors include Allan and Polly Pithan of Anthon, Iowa, their children, Angela and Keith Schrunk and their daughter, Kami, Michael and Courtney and children, Henry, Olivia, and Lily, David and Stacy and children, Emma and Derek, Brad Pithan of Boone, Iowa and his daughter, Kate Pithan, Greg Pithan of Danbury, Iowa and his daughter, Maggie and Larry Wunschel and their son, Kaison, Pat and Katie Pithan of Des Moines, Iowa and their daughters, Jennifer and Jaime Pithan; her brothers, Dean Wenger and Earl Wenger, both of Danbury; and many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Helen is preceded in death by her husband, George Pithan; her granddaughter, Kara Pithan; her parents, Franklin and Clara Wenger; an infant sister, Hilda Wenger; her sister and her best friend Marie Albertsen; and two sisters-in-law, Rosie Wenger and Della Wenger.
