Obituary for Hazel G. Thies
ξMapleton, Iowa - Hazel G. Thies, 96, of Mapleton, Iowa passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2015, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton. The funeral service will be Monday, May 4 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute, Iowa with Rev. Pastor Marcus Manley officiating. Hazel's place of burial and resurrection will be next to her husband, Rudy, at St. Clair Cemetery at Ute. Visitation will be Sunday after 6:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. The family is receiving condolences on line at www.armstrongfuneral.com. Hazel Gertrude (Hansen) Thies was born on a farm near Soldier, Iowa to Hans Hansen and Rosetta (Jensen) Hansen on January 27th, 1919. She was the youngest of nine children in the family and was baptized into the Lutheran faith at the Danish Lutheran Church at Moorhead, Iowa, and confirmed in the faith at the Soldier Lutheran Country Church on May 22. 1932. She attended schools at Soldier and Ute, Iowa. On November 12, 1936, she and Rudolph Thies were married at St. Paul Lutheran Church Parsonage in Ute. To this union, three children were born, Irven, Betty Jane, and Gary. Betty Jane was called to our real home at the age of one day in 1940. The family lived on farms near Soldier, Ute and finally moving to their home farm in 1952 near Mapleton, Iowa. Rudy and Hazel moved to their home in Mapleton, Iowa in 1987. Rudy was called to our real home in heaven on April 24th, 2001. She is survived by her two children and their families, five grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson. Hazel was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute since 1936. Family members left to honor Hazel are her son, Irvin Thies and his wife JoAnn of Mapleton and their children, James Thies and his wife, Lisa and their children, Amanda and Allysa, Kelly McGathy and her husband Gary and their children, Alex and Tanya, and one great great grandson, Aiden, Shelly DeMara and her husband, Patrick and their sons, Phillip, Chris, and Nick; her son, Gary Thies and his wife, Maxine, and their children, Melissa Satre and her husband, Dean and their son, Griffin and Marla Allen and her husband, Mike and their children, Nicole and Lauren; along with many nieces and nephews and extended family members. Along with her husband and daughter, Hazel was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be directed to Mission Central, 40718 Hwy.
