Harold Edward "Harry" Nutt was born December 30, 1933, in rural Castana, Iowa, the son of Ernest "Hickory" and Ethel {Nielsen) Nutt. Harry called Castana "home' his entire life. He grew up there and attended Castana High School. While in California, Harry enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country during the Korean War period from January 16, 1953 until January 23, 1957. On December 9, 1953, Harry was united in marriage to Marjorie Davis at the Methodist Church in Houston, Texas, where they were both baptized as well. The couple knew each other as children, growing up in the same community and after their wedding continued to share their life fully, not only living together and raising their two children but always working together too. After his honorable discharge, the couple worked at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas and later moved back home. They then began their career in road construction employed with Peter's Construction out of Des Moines, Iowa, a job they continued for 25 years. Harry's responsibility was to operate a bulldozer and the family recalls extended periods of time living in a trailer near the work site. After retiring from Peter's, Harry and Marge came back home to farm and currently shared the farm work with their son, Tom. Harry was a member of the Castana Community United Church of Christ and the American Legion Grimsley-Thayer Post #502 of Castana. Harry loved the outdoors, the land, and farming. He was faithful to his "red" tractors and was proud to be a Ford Man. Harry really enjoyed visiting with everyone and was known for his ease in making folks comfortable in sharing a conversation. Above all, he loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and young great grandchildren. Those family members surviving Harry include his wife Marge, celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this year;' a son and his wife, Tom and Jacque Nutt of Castana, Iowa and a daughter and her husband, Merrie and Tim Dean of Whiting, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Amanda, Teddy, Jeremy, Jennifer, Kolby, T.J., and Samantha; three great grandchildren, Hayley, Charlie, and Kyler; and two sisters and their husbands, Maxine and Gary Thies of Mapleton, Iowa and Karen and Melvin Houchens of Wichita, Kansas; along with other extended family members. Harry was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Roger and Jerry; and one brother-in-law, Maurice "Sonny" Jensen.
