After the family moved to Bronson, Iowa, Grace attended school there for several years. They moved to Sioux City, Blencoe, and then to Climbing Hill in 1936. After the death of her father, Grace lived with her mother and step father, John Eichhorn. In May 1940, she graduated from Climbing Hill High School.
