Frances L. Schmeling, 93, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at the Maple Heights Care Center of Mapleton, Iowa.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at the Armstrong – Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa. Evangelist Dale Wolf and Lay Minister Marie Whiteing will officiate; Committal Services will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery of Mapleton, Iowa. A visitation will be held one hour prior from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at the Armstrong – Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa. Frances Louise Schmeling was born on January 15, 1924 to Minnie M. (Lowe) and Elmer O. Wilson in Mapleton, Iowa. Frances graduated from Mapleton High School in 1942. She worked at the Mapleton Press for 5 years and retired from the First State Bank of Mapleton after 38 1/2 years as a Cashier, Assistant Trust Officer and Manager of the Fred H. Welch Insurance Agency. She served on the Board of Directors of the First State Bank and was Board Secretary. Frances was united in marriage to Arnold R. Schmeling July 1, 1950. Arnold passed away on January 13, 1972.
Frances was a lifetime member of St. John’s Methodist Church of Mapleton, Iowa, and was active in her church family serving as a past church treasurer and recording secretary for many years. She served as the treasurer for the Rebuild and Recover Committee to rebuild Mapleton after the tornado. She was a member of the Board of Directors of Maple Valley School Foundation, Mapleton Club and MVDI. Frances was active in many community activities including renovation of the local swimming pool, telephone and gas franchise and the successful bond issue for the Maple Valley High School and gym.
Frances also served on the Board of Directors of Monona Service, Inc. for seven years and three years as chairman of the board. Former member of the Monona County Cancer Society serving several years as chairman and publicity chairman. She served as chairman of the National Association of Bank Women for the nineteen county Northwest Iowa Group. Served as regional Vice President NaBW for one year for the States of Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri. Served on year on the National Scholarship Committee, Served three years on the Iowa Bankers Educational Committee. Served on the Care Review of Maple Heights, serving as chairman for many years. Former member of the Board of Martin Luther Homes in Mapleton and Logan.
She was a past Worthy Advisor of the Order of Rainbow for Girls, past Worthy Matron of the OES of Mapleton Chapter, now a member of Queen Esther Chapter. Onawa and a member of P.E.O. At one time Frances enjoyed bowing and golfing. She loved to play bridge, do crossword puzzles and the follow the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Survivors include four nieces Dr. Sally Nador of Wilmette, IL, Krista (Richard) Hagen of Deer River, MN, Marilyn (Kip) Trienens of West Port, NY, and Pamela (Steve) Ohm of Galena IL; nephew Lawrence C. Davis; step daughter Karen (Bob) Williams of Pleasanton, CA; five step grandchildren, four step great-grandchildren. Sisters-in-law Doris Schmeling of Melbourne, FL and Sarah Schmeling of Mahtomedi, MN; several great nieces and nephews. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one niece Katherine Thompson, stepson Duane (Max) Schmeling and all her siblings; nephew Phillip Davis; and sister-in-law Ella Wilson.
