Obituary for Ethel Nutt
Ethel A. Nutt Castana, IA - Ethel A. Nutt, 98, of Castana, Iowa passed away Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa. The funeral service will be Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the Castana Community United Church of Christ in Castana. Burial will be in Kennebec Cemetery at Castana. Visitation will be Monday, April 1 after 4:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa. In the early 1900's, Walter and Marie (Pedersen) Nielsen immigrated with other family members from Lokken, Denmark to Turin, Iowa in the Kennebec area. To this union, seven children were born. Their daughter, Ethel was born at Castana, Iowa on December 17, 1914. She grew up in the area and graduated from Castana High School with the class of 1932. On March 6, 1933, Ethel married Ernest "Hickory" Harold Nutt at Ponca, Nebraska. The couple started farming in 1937 three miles south of Castana until 2005, when Hickory entered the nursing home. He passed away August 6, 2007. Ethel later entered the nursing home as well. She was a member of the Castana Community United Church of Christ in Castana where she faithfully served on the Ladies Aid. She was also a past member of the Rebecca Lodge. Along with caring for her family, helping on the farm and keeping her home, Ethel enjoyed crocheting and quilting, often sharing her beautiful quilts with her family members. Survivors include one son and his wife, Harold "Harry" and Marge Nutt of Castana, Iowa; two daughters and their husbands, Maxine and Gary Thies of Mapleton, Iowa and Karen and Melvin Houchens of Wichita, Kansas; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Hope Nielsen of Blair, Nebraska and Jacqueline Nielsen of Omaha, Nebraska; and one sister-in-law and her husband, Eileen and Don Reed of Turin, Iowa. Along with her husband, Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Roger and Jerry Nutt; one son-in-law, Maurice "Sonny" Jensen, Jr.; two sisters, Margaret Algood and Ellen Gibson; and four brothers, Gerhard, Howard, Vince, and Norman Nielsen.
